June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 💙

Bowel cancer is Australia’s second deadliest cancer, yet when detected early, more than 90% of cases can be successfully treated.

This month, Macedon Ranges Health encourages our community to know the signs, stay up to date with screening, and have conversations that could save lives.

Symptoms can include:
• Changes in bowel habits
• Blood in the stool
• Unexplained weight loss
• Ongoing abdominal pain or bloating
• Extreme tiredness or fatigue

Importantly, bowel cancer can affect people of all ages - you are never “too young” to speak to your GP if something doesn’t feel right.

Eligible Australians aged 45–74 can participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program using the free home test kit mailed every two years. It’s quick, simple, and could save your life.

Let’s help break the stigma and encourage early detection this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

May is Family Violence Prevention Month

A time to reflect, learn and take action as a community. Family violence affects individuals, families and communities - and preventing it starts with awareness, connection and knowing where to go for support. Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing highlights that this month is about recognising the role we all play in stopping family and gender-based violence.

That’s why we’re bringing our community together.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to the incredible volunteers at Macedon Ranges Health. 💜

Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do - providing connection, kindness, support and care to members of our community every single day. From helping clients safely on and off buses, assisting in group classes, offering friendly conversation, or simply showing up with a smile, their impact reaches far beyond the task at hand.

The generosity and compassion of our volunteers help create a stronger, more connected community, and we simply couldn’t do it without them.

Here’s what some of our Social Support participants had to say about our volunteers:
💬 “I think they are wonderful people giving up their time to help us.”
💬 “All volunteers are wonderful, in what they do, helping with clients.”
💬 “I think they are excellent and very lovely.”
💬 “They do so much for free and are so precious to have, and we don’t have enough of them and they don’t get enough appreciation.”
💬 “Very helpful and get us to where we need to go, helping with walkers on and off the bus. They are very appreciated by us.”

To every volunteer at Macedon Ranges Health - thank you for the time, care and compassion you give so generously. You truly make a difference. 🌟

MAYDAYS for Eating Disorders

This May, we’re supporting MAYDAYS, an awareness campaign led by Butterfly Foundation to shine a light on eating disorders and the barriers people face in accessing support.

Eating disorders are serious and complex mental health conditions - and access to care isn’t equal for everyone. Across regional and rural communities, distance, stigma and limited services can make it harder for people to get the help they need.
At Macedon Ranges Health, we recognise how important it is that everyone, no matter where they live, can access safe, timely and supportive care.

This MAYDAYS, let’s:
✔ Start conversations about body image and eating disorders
✔ Challenge stigma and misconceptions
✔ Support those who may be struggling
✔ Advocate for better access to services in regional communities

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available. You’re not alone 💜

Happy International Nurses Day! 💙

Today - and every day - we celebrate the incredible nurses who make a difference in our community.

At Macedon Ranges Health, we are proud to work alongside a team of dedicated professionals who bring compassion, skill and unwavering commitment to everything they do.

This year, we’re shining a light on our community nurse Louise, who has devoted more than 50 years to nursing - including over two decades supporting Women’s Health at MRH.
Louise is known for her warm, holistic approach to care and her ability to create a safe, supportive space for every client she works with. Her work includes:
✔ Health screenings and chronic condition support
✔ Cardiac rehabilitation, including our Heartsmart Program
✔ Women’s Health services, including cervical screening and the Well Women’s Clinic

Through her work, Louise helps women feel heard, respected and empowered to take charge of their health - especially when navigating sensitive or complex concerns.

With a wealth of experience across nursing, midwifery, education and reproductive health, Louise continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of those she supports.

Today, we thank Louise, and all nurse, for the care, strength and compassion you bring to our community. Your impact is truly invaluable.

Today is World Asthma Day

Did you know asthma affects 1 in 9 Australians - and for many young people, va**ng is making it worse?

Va**ng isn’t harmless. It can irritate the airways, worsen asthma symptoms, and increase the risk of serious lung issues - including pneumonia and long-term damage.

For people with asthma, the risks are even higher:
• Va**ng can trigger flare-ups and breathing difficulties
• It can lead to inflammation and permanent lung damage
• Even second-hand exposure can have an impact

Recent insights from young people in our community show that va**ng is still highly prevalent and often seen as “normal” - driven by peer pressure, social media and FOMO.

That’s why we’re continuing to take action.

Macedon Ranges Health and Macedon Ranges Shire Council are offering free sessions for schools and community groups though our program Va**ng: No Filter. Through this program you will receive:
✔ Real stories from local young people
✔ Clear, evidence-based information
✔ Practical strategies to help young people make informed choices

These early conversations matter - because prevention starts before habits form. If you’re a school or community group and want to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.
