Community Options is a local ACT not-for-profit community-based organisation with more than 25 years of experience in providing services to older people, people with disabilities and their families. We specialise in providing coordination and intensive case management services to people with complex needs by providing a range of in-home and community based support services under:

Most people facing a life-limiting illness want to spend as much time as possible in familiar surroundings, close to family and friends.

The ACT Government needs to invest in community-based palliative care services, including support delivered by organisations like Community Options, because quality of life isn't only shaped by clinical care.

Care coordination, practical assistance and support for carers all help make it possible for more people to remain at home for longer.

As Canberra's population grows older, so too will the need for these community services.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of John Fely, Chair of the Community Options Board.

John had served Community Options for 13 Years, as a Committee member from May 2013 and then as Chair of Community Options Board from 2020, and we are deeply thankful for his leadership, guidance and commitment to our organisation and the people we support, as well as the friendship he shared with those around him.

John’s dedication and contribution to Community Options will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Leaving hospital is often just the beginning.

Community Options provides coordination of in-home, non-clinical support for people with an end-stage illness following hospital discharge, recognising that good care extends beyond hospital walls.

For many families, practical support at home means the difference between coping and feeling overwhelmed.

As demand for community care grows, ensuring people can access these services when they need them will remain an important part of a sustainable health system.

Finally, a comedy show where a crying baby doesn’t get you kicked out of the room. Nappies and Comedy is a stand-up comedy show for parents who need a laugh but can’t find a sitter. The are a judgment-free zone. If you need to feed, change a blowout, or rock a screaming infant, you’re in good company – one of the comedians might even give you a hand!

They’ve traded the sticky nightclub floors for a space where you can park the pram, spread out a blanket for some tummy time, and get comfortable with your baby.

They have a line up of some of Canberra’s finest comedians. Whilst they are baby-friendly, the jokes are strictly for the grownups so they’re not really suited for bubs who have started picking up new vocabulary.

As ACT’s Primary Health Network, CHN currently commissions the Care Finder Program through both Meridian ACT and Community Options. Care Finders support vulnerable older Canberrans needing intensive assistance to access aged care and other supports.

ℹ️ Following the announcement by Community Options that it will be closing by the end of this year, CHN is working closely with Community Options to manage a safe transition of the Care Finder Program and will soon be commissioning an alternate provider.

Currently:

• Community Options is still providing the Care Finder Program and will continue to accept new clients while a new provider is established.
• Meridian ACT continues to provide the Care Finder Program and accept new clients.

CHN will advise referrers when a new provider is in place, however referral pathways have not currently changed.

Founded in 1989, Community Options has spent decades providing specialised and flexible care, including for its 139 current clients across its three programs.

Community Options will continue supporting existing clients while arranging safe transitions through to 31 December 2026. Client services and client-service positions are expected to end by that date, with voluntary solvent winding up expected to progress in March 2027.
