You may start noticing these new signs and tangle bins around the lake.

As we celebrate World Environment Day, we would like to acknowledge the incredible contribution of our volunteers who help protect and care for our local environment.

World Environment Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire action to conserve and restore the natural places we all value. It is also a time to recognise the people whose efforts make a real difference in our community.

We would especially like to thank Imogen Ridley for her outstanding work designing new signs as part of a collaboration with OzFish and ACT Government Office of nature Conservation Tangle bins project around Lake Burley Griffin and the Molonglo River.

These new signs and bins also supports recreational fishing and provides education on species found in our waterways and a place to dispose of any disgarded tackle.

Whilst completing her Diploma in Graphic Design, Imogen was provided the opportunity to work with Molonglo Conservation Group on this project. Her creativity and professionalism has helped deliver engaging signage that supports environmental volunteering and encourages the community to play an active role in protecting our waterways.

Thank you, Imogen, and thank you to all our volunteers for your dedication, passion, and commitment to creating a healthier environment for future generations.

Have you seen the First Nations totems installed throughout Dawson St Gardens -Bargang for Reconciliation Week (happening now to 3 June)? This year's theme is ‘All In’, a call for us all to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day.

It’s a good time to celebrate the Gardens’ indigenous heritage, reflected in the beautiful sign on Theodore St in the middle of DSG-B. Bagariin Ngunnawal Cultural Consulting was the lead consultant in collaboration with Ngunnawal artist, Jessica Mapiva Brown and Winanggaay Ngunnawal Language Aboriginal Corporation, who also gifted DSG with the Ngunnawal name, Bargang. This means Gum Tree in Ngunnawal language and represents the prominent gum trees in the Gardens, including our beautiful Registered tree, Eucalyptus mannifera, seen in one of the photos.

Why not take a stroll through Dawson St Gardens-Bargang this week? Everything is looking fresh after the rains.

On Saturday we shared a day on Country taking part in a cool burn at St Mark’s Grassland. Cool burning is a traditional Indigenous land management practice that uses slow-moving, low-intensity mosaic fire at the right time of year to help reduce fuel loads, support biodiversity, encourage new growth and maintain healthy ecosystems. It was a privilege to witness the knowledge, care and deep connection to Country that underpins this practice. We’d like to thank Wally Bell for guiding the day, the Friends of Grasslands for their support and for the volunteers who came to learn and participate.

This event was made possible through the ACT Government’s Environment Grant Program.

Huge transformation happening along the Molonglo River!

Over the past few months we’ve been busy restoring sections of riverbank at Beard and Jerrabomberra Wetlands as part of the Urban Rivers Project — and the results are already looking amazing.

At Beard, around 6,000 native grasses and sedges (mainly Carex and Poa) have gone into the ground across 2 hectares of riparian zone to help stabilise banks and improve habitat for wildlife.

At Jerrabomberra Wetlands, we’ve been tackling invasive woody weeds including Crack Willow, Poplars, and Blackberry, opening up space for native vegetation to bounce back. We also planted an additional 1,500 native grasses and sedges, focusing on Poa and Carex species, to help strengthen and restore the wetland edge.

Swipe through the before-and-after photos to see the difference! 💚

Big thanks to everyone involved in helping bring these sites back to life along the Molonglo River.

The rain last weekend is benefitting many of our plants on Dawson St Gardens Curtin in the last of the growing season, while others are just coming into their own. It's heartening to see what's in flower as the weather cools!

It's a good time for our next working bee, this coming Tuesday 12 May. We'll be doing some more transplanting, weeding, edging, and mulching any bare spots. There’ll be the usual 9am start, ending with morning tea around 10.30-10.45. Tools, gloves and sunscreen will be provided. BYO mug ☕🍪 (and a small plate to share is always welcome, as are new volunteers!).

DSG will also be acknowledging Reconciliation Week, which takes place from 27 May to 3 June; Reconciliation Day is 27 May. Take a walk through the Gardens during Reconciliation Week and see the totems in Australia’s First Nations colours that'll be displayed throughout DSG. This year's theme is All In, a call for us all to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. It’s a good time to celebrate the Gardens’ other name, Bargang, the Ngunnawal name gifted by the Winanagaay Ngunnawal Aboriginal Language Corporation. Bargang means Gum Tree in Ngunnawal language and represents the prominent gum trees in the Gardens, including our beautiful Registered tree, Eucalyptus mannifera
