A not-for-profit organisation welcoming and supporting people seeking asylum & sanctuary in Brisbane We cannot function without people like you.

The Romero Centre is a welcoming sanctuary for people seeking asylum. We provide expert support for women, children, men and families, who have fled their homes abroad and are seeking protection and shelter in Brisbane with little or no income. They are often struggling to overcome complicated challenges and traumatic experiences. On Saturday night, more than 100 people came together for the Oscar Romero Awards, a beautiful celebration of the people who make the Romero community so special.

Across eight award categories, we celebrated the achievements of people seeking asylum and refugees supported by Romero, recognising milestones in Education, Employment, Thriving with Courage and Peer Support. We also celebrated the remarkable people and organisations who walk alongside the Romero community through the Business with a Heart, Organisation of Compassion, Volunteer Service and Social Justice Awards.

Saint Oscar Romero was known for his unwavering commitment to the poor and oppressed. Every day, the Romero Centre here in Brisbane continues that legacy, living out the Church’s mission to serve those on the margins, uphold the dignity of every person and be a sign of compassion in our world.

A huge congratulations to everyone recognised, and thank you to the team, volunteers, supporters and wider community for all you do. This night was a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together with courage, compassion and hope.

Our Conversational English class for Beginners has a few spots available.

Our classes are run by skilled volunteer teachers every Wednesday & Friday from 9.30am to 12pm. There is a short break for a morning tea (and sometimes a sing along and a dance) in the middle. Our classes run during the Qld School Term.

Dear community, our shelves are bare at the moment missing all essentials and we need your help.

These items are more than just food or toiletries — they provide comfort, nutrition, and a sense of dignity to the people seeking asylum who rely on our pantry each week. Many people who come to us for support do not have any income, and most have very little income.

If you’re able, please consider donating a items - chat to your coworkers, neighbours, school mates to donate a few items also. You can either drop off during our opening hours or you can organise a Woollies/Coles delivery.

Every contribution truly makes a difference.

- Tuna
- Sanitary napkins

On Friday evening, we celebrated the first group of incredible students who have completed their Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care and Disability) through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.

It was a special evening filled with laughter, storytelling, a shared meal — and “silly awards”! 🏆😄

But beyond the fun, there were some truly powerful moments as students reflected on their journey.

One of the most beautiful things we have witnessed throughout the course has been the solidarity that developed between classmates. Students encouraged one another, supported each other through challenges and celebrated each other's successes. What started as a group of individual learners became a closely knit community. 🤝❤️

We were missing a couple of students on the evening due to work and travel commitments, but they were very much part of our celebrations and this achievement.

We were also delighted to be joined by the team from the Asia Pacific Institute and Multicultural Community Centre, whose important contribution helped make the course accessible and achievable for our participants.

This celebration was about much more than completing a qualification. It was about confidence, resilience, belonging and discovering what is possible when people are given the right support and the opportunity to succeed.

Congratulations to all our students! 🎉 We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved — and we can't wait to see where this next chapter takes you. 💙

The Romero Centre is a place of connection, welcome and practical support.

Last week, we had a full house for our Employment Readiness workshop facilitated by Tanya Abbey of RecruitCorp, and supported by Serve the City volunteers. Tanya has been a long time supporter of the centre, providing practical support in preparing for employment in Australia.

Our employment workshops go beyond resume and cover letter preparation. They offer opportunity for connection between people seeking asylum navigating similar journeys, and professionals who can offer contacts in their networks for employment. Participants build confidence, share stories and tips, and build community. We always share a meal afterwards.

For this workshop, our long term supporters from Mercy Works also joined us and built connections with our participants.

Providing opportunity for connection, networking, and direct employment pathways is invaluable to migrants finding their footing in Australia. Get in toucch, if you would like to support our employment program - there are so many ways you can get involved and support.

Passion for Arts recently showcased the beautiful work of its artists at the Little Kings Movement, the original home of Romero Centre.

Led by the wonderful Rosario, Passion for Arts meets at Romero every Tuesday, creating a welcoming space where participants and community members can connect through art, share stories and develop new skills.

Throughout the year, the group holds exhibitions of their work, generously donating a portion of artwork sales back to Romero Centre.

Friends, our pantry stocks are running critically low, and we don't have enough for every one who is in need at the moment. Can you help?

The list below is what we use the most and are having to restock regularly right now. If you are able, could you add a few things to your shopping list this week and drop them in? Or organise a delivery to us during business hours?

Gift vouchers for Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, in smaller values such as $25, $30 and $50 are also really useful to support those in need.

If you are able to collect pantry items as a school, community, parish, workplace or organisation, let us know - we're happy to arrange collection from you. Or we'd love to welcome you to the Centre and show you around and offer you a cuppa and talk about how your support helps.

There are only a few spots remaining at the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care/Disability) CHC33021, commencing on 31 July 2026 at Newmarket. This Skilling Queenslanders for Work funded program provides participants with the skills, qualifications and practical experience needed to pursue employment opportunities within the care sector.

Program Highlights:
✔ 5 months of learning and hands-on experience
✔ Industry-relevant training in Aged Care and Disability Support
✔ No cost to eligible participants
✔ First Aid & CPR
✔ Yellow Card, Blue Card, and Police Certificate
✔ Employment support

Ideal Referrals:
• Job seekers interested in caring professions
• Job seekers of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds looking to upskill
• People seeking meaningful and rewarding work
• Individuals wanting a pathway into a sector with strong workforce demand

Eligibility Requirements:
• Aged 16 years or older
• No longer attending school
• Not currently enrolled in accredited training
• Permanent Queensland resident or on a pathway to residency
• Have not previously participated in a Skilling Queenslanders for Work program

Our Employment Program for people seeking asylum is about so much more than helping someone find a job. It's about building confidence, creating opportunities, and connecting people with a community that strives for equity.

One organisation that has been part of this journey for many years is RSM. A special thank you to Leo and Jermaine, who generously volunteer their time each year to deliver practical workshops on Australian tax basics, giving our participants the knowledge and confidence they need as they begin employment in Australia.

Their support doesn't stop there. Throughout the year, the RSM team also raises donations and personally delivers much-needed items to support the people and families we work with. Their ongoing generosity and genuine commitment have made a lasting difference to many lives.
