Friends, our pantry stocks are running critically low, and we don't have enough for every one who is in need at the moment. Can you help?

The list below is what we use the most and are having to restock regularly right now. If you are able, could you add a few things to your shopping list this week and drop them in? Or organise a delivery to us during business hours?

Gift vouchers for Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, in smaller values such as $25, $30 and $50 are also really useful to support those in need.

If you are able to collect pantry items as a school, community, parish, workplace or organisation, let us know - we're happy to arrange collection from you. Or we'd love to welcome you to the Centre and show you around and offer you a cuppa and talk about how your support helps.

There are only a few spots remaining at the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care/Disability) CHC33021, commencing on 31 July 2026 at Newmarket. This Skilling Queenslanders for Work funded program provides participants with the skills, qualifications and practical experience needed to pursue employment opportunities within the care sector.

Program Highlights:
✔ 5 months of learning and hands-on experience
✔ Industry-relevant training in Aged Care and Disability Support
✔ No cost to eligible participants
✔ First Aid & CPR
✔ Yellow Card, Blue Card, and Police Certificate
✔ Employment support

Ideal Referrals:
• Job seekers interested in caring professions
• Job seekers of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds looking to upskill
• People seeking meaningful and rewarding work
• Individuals wanting a pathway into a sector with strong workforce demand

Eligibility Requirements:
• Aged 16 years or older
• No longer attending school
• Not currently enrolled in accredited training
• Permanent Queensland resident or on a pathway to residency
• Have not previously participated in a Skilling Queenslanders for Work program

Our Employment Program for people seeking asylum is about so much more than helping someone find a job. It's about building confidence, creating opportunities, and connecting people with a community that strives for equity.

One organisation that has been part of this journey for many years is RSM. A special thank you to Leo and Jermaine, who generously volunteer their time each year to deliver practical workshops on Australian tax basics, giving our participants the knowledge and confidence they need as they begin employment in Australia.

More than 200 people joined us for our Welcome Walk over the weekend, walking together in solidarity with people seeking asylum and refugees, and celebrating the rich cultural diversity that strengthens our community.

With vibrant cultural performances and storytelling, children's activities, community conversations, and shared food, the afternoon was joy-filled with connection and generosity.

A significant moment was hearing directly from people who have sought asylum and rebuilt their lives in Australia. Their stories of courage, resilience and gratitude reminded us why creating welcoming communities matters. Their voices challenged us, inspired us and highlighted the profound difference that compassion and support can make.

Thank you to everyone who walked, volunteered, performed, donated and participated. Together, we demonstrated that everyone deserves safety, dignity, belonging and the opportunity to thrive.

It costs over $800k each year to keep the doors of Romero open with limited access to grants and external funding. It has always been the community that has kept us going! When one of our participants arrived in Australia seeking safety from political persecution, he faced major challenges. Separated from his children, without stable housing or enough money for essentials, and dealing with mental health issues, he was unsure of his future and whether he would find work.

With support from our team, he accessed practical help, community connections, employment support and training. We helped him gain a White Card, First Aid and CPR qualifications, obtain an Australian driver’s licence, connect with professionals in his field, attend employment workshops and receive one-on-one help with job applications.

Today, he is employed in his industry, rebuilding his life and supporting himself and his family overseas.

He said the support helped him regain confidence, build skills and feel welcome in his new community. Working alongside Australians also challenged some of his preconceptions and showed him the kindness and support of those around him.
Stories like this show why community and employment programs matter. With the right support, people seeking asylum can overcome barriers, contribute their skills, strengthen our communities and build better futures for themselves and their families.

Our English conversation program has been a long-standing project run by the Romero Centre, promoting social inclusion, and offering free English classes to those we support. The program is entirely volunteer run.

The classes run during school terms on Wednesday and Friday mornings (9.30am to 12pm) with a little snack break in between. We have three Levels - English Literacy, Beginner and Beyond Beginner.

Currently, we need an English class tutor for the Beyond Beginner class on Friday mornings. This position will commence on Friday 17th July (School Term 3). This position co-shares the teaching with another tutor, meaning you would teach two Fridays a month.

- Previous experience teaching English as a Second Language (formal ESL qualification not required)
- Advanced organisational, listening and communication skills
- Long-term commitment to the centre (at least one year)
- Ability to lead activities in a non-structured environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
- Cross-cultural interpersonal sills
- Relevant tertiary qualifications, skills and/or experience
- Personal capacity and appropriate motivation to undertake this role
