Speld Qld are hosting a four-day Sounds-Write workshop in Wynnum on the 18th - 19th June & 25th - 26th June 2026. It will be held at Mt Carmel Centre: 73 Pine Street, Wynnum, QLD 4178

Sounds-Write is an evidence-based phonics program utilising an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading and spelling. This four-day intensive course offers an instructional method that is structured, cumulative, sequential and explicit; all of which are strongly recommended for teaching children to read and spell. Progressing through Initial Code to Extended Code, the training includes:

- Clearly structured, easy to follow lesson plans.
- A complete program, manual and printable resources.
- Well designed scope and sequence.

Sounds-Write is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2, and also offers highly effective intervention for children at all year levels who have fallen behind with their reading and spelling from Year 3 onwards.

Word Origins is an evidence-informed program from DSF designed to provide the next step in spelling, reading and vocabulary instruction for students in middle to upper primary school and beyond. Designed to follow any high-quality structured phonics program, Word Origins targets student knowledge of the morphological regularities of English, and the etymology, or language of origin, of our vocabulary, and the impact these elements have on spelling, reading, and word knowledge.

Suitable for use in both whole-class and intervention settings, Word Origins includes complete lesson plans, resources, and assessment materials for Level 1 of the program (Levels 2 and 3 to be released in 2025). Teachers currently delivering the program comment on its ease of use, effectiveness, and the way students are hooked on the lesson content.

FREE Parent Support Group Session: Support and Intervention in the Early Years!

It is widely recognised that early intervention can support students with reading and writing difficulties. It can be challenging for families to decide what support is needed and when. This group is for families with children from pre-kindy to year 3. It will cover:

-The importance of language in the early years.
-Phonological/ phonemic awareness – what is it and how can practise be supported at home.
-The introduction of phonics (letters and sounds).
-Understanding learning difficulties to offer timely and targeted support.

FREE Parent Support Group Session!

In Queensland senior secondary schooling, AARA stands for Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments. These are supports provided to assist students with disabilities, medical conditions, or other significant circumstances so they can complete assessments on the same basis as their peers.

Speld Qld's next parent support group will discuss eligibility to apply for an AARA, the common types of adjustment and the process for applying.
