What an incredible celebration of Refugee Week 2026. 💙

Over the weekend, SMRC was proud to celebrate the stories, cultures, talents and contributions that make our community stronger under the theme, A Million Stories, One Community.

💜The day was filled with connection, learning and celebration. Community members enjoyed cultural displays, shared stories on our Forest of Stories canvas, experienced traditional Afghan tea and an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, explored cultural storytelling exhibits, and connected with people from many different backgrounds.

Our stage came alive with an inspiring showcase of talent from across the world. Highlights included Bollywood singer Hazel Sharma, traditional Afghan music by DJ Maryam, a moving violin performance by young musician Negin, a vibrant multicultural fashion parade, traditional Indian classical dance by Narthanalaya performers Anjani and Gayathri, an Ethiopian coffee ceremony demonstration, the powerful youth presentation The Journey of Hope by the Shirzad sisters, an energetic freestyle football and parkour performance by EasyMoh and Fardin, and a spectacular South Sudanese dance performance that brought the celebration to a joyful close 😍

Throughout the event, the stories shared reminded us that every journey matters. Every voice contributes to our collective story, and every person helps strengthen the rich multicultural fabric of our community.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the day so special.

👉 A special thank you to The Hon Gabrielle Williams MP, Mr Lee Tarlamis MP, and Deputy Mayor Cr Phillip Danh - Greater Dandenong Council for taking the time to join us and celebrate alongside our communities.

We would also like to thank the SMRC Board, our dedicated staff, and our incredible volunteers. Events like this are only possible because of your commitment, generosity and hard work.

Refugee Week reminds us that while every story is unique, together they create and connect the threads of one community. Thank you for celebrating with us. 🌏✨

One Million Stories. One Community.

📖 Dr Naseer’s Story 📖

20+ years of humanitarian experience and the first questions was, ‘Do you have local experience?’ 🤔

Dr Naseer shares the reality of arriving in Australia with a wealth of skills but without the references employers expected from a country impacted by war.

A story of resilience, determination, and proving that experience doesn’t stop at the border. 🌏

As the financial year ends, donate today to help expand SMRC’s social support groups, to connect more people like Dr Naseer with their community.

👑 There were smiles all around as our Latin American and Spanish Group came together to celebrate the King's Birthday with a special High Tea.

The room was filled with beautiful flowers, handmade crowns, delicious treats and plenty of laughter. Clients enjoyed catching up with friends, sharing stories, listening to music and even hitting the dance floor for some salsa 💃

💜 Days like these are about more than celebration. They create opportunities for connection, friendship and community, helping people stay active and engaged while having fun together.

A special thank you to SMRC staff, Ricardo and Sisouphane for organising the event, and to our wonderful volunteers Rosy and Deva for preparing a delicious royal lunch.

🌏 One Million Stories. One Community. 🌏

For more than 25 years, Jatinder and Jaswinder have called Melbourne their home after moving to Australia to join their children who were studying here.

Following Jatinder’s cancer surgery, the couple were introduced to SMRCs social support groups, helping them connect with community, friendship, and support during an incredibly difficult time.

💜 Today, between them, they are active members of four SMRC groups and are passionate about helping others who may be feeling isolated find the same sense of belonging they did.

Your donation can help connect more migrants and refugees in our community to vital social groups that reduce isolation, strengthen wellbeing, and create meaningful connections.
