Growing healthy gardens in the Top End comes with its own unique challenges, particularly with our climate, seasonal extremes and often challenging soils. Improving soil health and managing irrigation effectively can make a real difference to how efficiently plants use water ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง

Power and Water have recently released The Ultimate Irrigation User Guide. Itโ€™s a free resource designed to help homeowners, landscape professionals and the ornamental horticulture industry grow thriving and territory-tough gardens and landscapes while using water efficiently.

Developed alongside experts, this free resource includes handy information on irrigation system design, maintenance, seasonal water schedules, mulching, soil improvement and plan selection.

Earlier this month growers from across the Darwin Rural area came together for a full-day Spray Optimisation Workshop hosted by NT Farmers, alongside industry legend Don Thorp from Horticultural Spraying Specialists.

Don shared his advice drawn from years of experience working with growers and spray equipment across the hort industry. The workshop covered spray coverage, application techniques, equipment setup and calibration, with plenty of opportunity for growers to ask questions and work through real-world examples.

It was a great day for growers to compare notes and pick up a few new ideas to take home and use on their own farms!

Growers interested in future spray optimisation activities or resources can contact NT Farmers Vegetable Industry Development Officer Chris Dang at [email protected]. This workshop was supported by AUSVEG.

Reliable data starts with a well-maintained weather station ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ

Weather stations are exposed 24/7, so they need regular checks just like any other equipment. ๐ŸŒง๏ธโ„๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

๐ŸœInsects love making their homes in weather stations. Paper wasps and ants can interfere in the sensors and potentially affect readings. ๐Ÿชฐ

Clean solar panels = reliable power - dust, dirt, and bird droppings reduce the panel's ability to generate power. ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›๐Ÿ’ฉ

Monthly checks can make a big difference to the quality and reliability of weather observations. โ˜‘๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟFrom the classroom to the passionfruit farm! ๐Ÿ’œ

Yesterday, 13 Year 5 and 6 students from Larrakeyah Primary School enjoyed a hands-on farm visit to Northern Territory Tropical Passionfruit.

The students learnt about:

๐ŸThe important role bees play in pollination of passionfruit
๐Ÿ’งHow water use is monitored via probes to irrigate sustainability
๐ŸžGood bugs and bad bugs in the orchard
๐ŸŒฑHow passionfruit is grown and harvested
๐Ÿ”Egg production for the local community
๐ŸšHow drones are used to apply fertiliser, particularly important during the wet season when tractors can't access wet areas

The students were fascinated by the technology, surprised by the cost of farming equipment and of course, very happy to finish the morning with some delicious passionfruit! ๐Ÿ˜‹

A huge thank you to Jason and Brad from Northern Territory Tropical Passionfruit for hosting the students and giving them such a wonderful opportunity to learn about where food comes from and what goes into running a farm. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

What a great morning! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿš๐Ÿšœ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ† Douglas Daly takes the trophy! ๐Ÿ†

Over the weekend, the 22nd annual Douglas Daly vs Sponsors Fundraising Cricket Match has been played and won, with the locals claiming a convincing 130โ€“52 victory over the Sponsors! NT Farmers represented with Project Administrator Mandy Tripcony taking the Catch of Day!!

Importantly the event raised valuable funds for the Douglas Daly Community Development Association through the generous support of sponsors and a fundraising auction. A delicious evening meal was served up by B'RAD BBQ, followed by live entertainment and plenty of good company.

A great night of cricket, community spirit and fundraising - a much-loved Douglas Daly tradition ๐Ÿ’š

The Australian Pollination Strategy project is now open for national consultation ๐Ÿ

Your insights and experience can help identify key challenges, inform the actions needed to strengthen Australiaโ€™s pollination security and shape the first Australian Pollination Strategy.

The consultation is open to everyone involved in pollination, including beekeepers, growers, land managers, researchers, industry, gardeners and members of local communities.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes and will close on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Judging the horticulture, honey and egg displays was no easy task. Congratulations to all the winners, runners-up and highly commended exhibitors on your fantastic entries!

Our Little Diggers helped plant hundreds of sunflowers for the young ones to grow at home, and it was great to spend time with the community answering lots of questions about agriculture in the NT, and help with those pesky pests and w**ds in your backyards ๐ŸŒฑ We look forward to doing it all again next year ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ
