Operation Easter begins at midnight tonight and concludes at 11:59pm on Monday 6th April 2026.

The operation targets the causal factors of major collisions, being speeding, drink/drug driving, fatigue, occupant restraints and distractions (mobile phones). Double Demerits apply to these offences, there is no increase to any fines, only demerit points.

While there will be a significant Police presence on metro and rural roads around the state, we ask drivers to do their bit to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely. You can do this by.

• Planning your journey, if you are travelling around the state to visit family or friends, plan your breaks along the way and support local communities by getting out of the car and grabbing a coffee or a meal. Make sure your vehicle is up for the trip, have you checked your tyre pressure, a fully loaded vehicle will require more tyre pressure to safely handle an increase in vehicle weight.
• Be patient on our roads, your family won’t mind if you are a little late, there are much worse things than getting a speeding ticket and that is the conversation we don’t want to have with your family at Easter time if it all goes wrong.
• Have a Plan B ready to go if you are going to have a drink this Easter and stick to it. Paying for a taxi might not only be the safer option but cheaper than a day in court.

Look out for each other this Easter period, all we want this Easter Operation is for everyone in New South Wales to get to their destination safely.

🔥ARE YOU PLANNING ON LIGHTING A FIRE ON YOUR PROPERTY 🔥
🚨The BFDP ends on the 31 March 2026.

🚨Outside the BFDP (The period between 01 April and 31 September) You are still legally obliged to notify your neighbours and the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before you light up.

🚨Notifying us of your planned burn can help reduce unnecessary emergency calls.

🚨You can notify easily online by using the link below. Notifications to the NSW RFS can last up to 21 days, so if there is a possibility you are going to light a fire use the link below:
https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp
🚨This website requires 24 hours’ notice.

⭕If you are planning to undertake a burn on your property, it is important you check the local weather conditions, the primary concern should always be safety, so never conduct a burn if conditions are not suitable.

⭕Stubble burning is an important tool for rice growers, but smoke can affect your local community. Responsible stubble management is the key to maintain your right to burn. The Ricegrowers Association (RGA) advises all farmers to implement best practice when burning stubble to avoid smoke impacts on nearby towns, neighbouring dwellings or roads.

☎️If you require any advice or assistance in conducting pile burns on your property, or help with notifications, please contact the MIA District office on 02 6966 7800.
