The Great Koala National Park

The NSW Upper House has just passed the Great Koala National Park Reservations Bill! It’s done - we finally have our GKNP! 🐨❤️

What an historic day! After 15 years of community campaigning, the trees will permanently stop falling in over 178,000 hectares of public native forest on the Coffs Coast on Gumbaynggirr and Dunghatti Country!

Congratulations to all those who have campaigned and contributed for the GKNP over so many years - what a journey!

At last the koalas, greater gliders and myriad of other native fauna can live in peace and recover from decades of unsustainable clear fell logging that has decimated their habitats.

We acknowledge the hard work of Minister Penny Sharpe and thank her and Premier Chris Minns for bringing the GKNP home.🙏

Special thanks to NPAs Dr Grahame Douglas and the NPA GKNP campaign team along with Dailan Pugh NEFA, Susie Russell NCEC, Sue Higginson and Cate Faehrmann NSW Greens, Clancy Bernard NCC and Stuart Blanch WWF who worked so hard for this outcome and never lost sight of the long game. 👏

An historic day for forest conservation!🙏🌈❤️🐨

🌳 THANK YOU, GREENS! 🌳

Today, the federal Greens announced they will support an improved INFM method, following negotiations with the federal government.

We know how much pressure the Greens have been under throughout this debate. We know there are deeply held concerns across the environment movement about carbon credits and offsets.

That’s why we want to acknowledge this decision, and the work that went into securing stronger protections for our forests.

The Greens have negotiated:

🌳 A permanent increase in the required reduction in logging, from 20% to 25% in 2028 and 30% for projects registered after 2030.

🌳 Protections to prevent native forests being reclassified as plantations to avoid the scheme’s safeguards.

🌳 A legal precedent to prevent coal and gas from accessing credits created under the scheme where state governments have committed to exclude them.

The Greens say these changes will “protect more forest, likely bring forward new national parks, and expedite the end of native forest logging." and that's worth celebrating!

As Greens Leader Larissa Waters said today, the party room has resolved to support the improved INFM because “forest and habitat is critical to prevent endangered species from extinction as well as the climate.”

For those of us who have spent years fighting to protect Australia’s native forests, this matters.

These forests are not a hypothetical policy exercise. They are living ecosystems, habitat for threatened species, carbon stores and places that communities have fought for decades to protect.

We cannot thank the Greens enough for taking the time to negotiate stronger protections and ultimately choosing to support a pathway that could help bring native forest logging to an end.

And to the Greens, we want you to know this: You have our support. This is a huge step, but the fight isn’t over.

Now we need to make sure these commitments deliver what they promise: more protected forests, less logging, and an accelerated transition away from native forest logging. 🌳💚

Thankyou Sue Higginson for all your hard work and tireless advocacy for our native forests and the GKNP. We look forward to seeing the despicable National Party disallowance motion crash and burn on the 15th and the improved INFM enabling true forest protection. 🙏🌈🐨🕺🏼
