Sadly, where this breeding population of koalas live at Birkdale is about to undergo a massive transformation in the form of an industrial sized whitewater centre proposed for the site.
GPS tracking maps show that these koalas ‘home ranges’ (territories) encompass the impact area where the proposed Olympic stadium will be constructed. KAG understands that some or all of the habitat trees within this partially cleared development area will be removed for the whitewater centre and an impenetrable construction fence placed across the site for years during construction blocking movement for koalas and other wildlife. Currently it’s an open grassed area with stepping stone trees scattered across it that is easily traversed by koalas and other wildlife that call the site home.
The excavation area will be 8 metres deep in places (2 metres deeper than Chandler diving pool).
KAG and other community groups have been raising concerns for many years about the impacts on impeding koala movement and interfering with the freshwater aquifer that threatens the future of core koala habitat that is dependent on this underground water source during dry periods.
Ccncerns about the significant impacts on the endangered koalas living on and around this site and damage that will occur to the ecologically fragile aquifer has fallen on deaf ears, even though it appears canoe slalom event will be not included in the future as an Olympic sport.

🚨 URGENT — PLEASE CHECK YOUR YARDS, ALEXANDRA HILLS 🚨

Further to our last post, vets have confirmed that this female koala has a joey.

We now know she wasn't hit by a car just once — she was hit twice.

Once a couple of days ago, and again this morning.

There is a very real possibility her joey was separated from her during either of these impacts, and may still be somewhere in the area.

We urgently need residents in and around 280 Finucane Road, Alexandra Hills to check your yards, trees, fences and anywhere a small joey could be hiding.
