Thank you Qld Koala Conservation Collective for the awesome photos and for supporting today’s ‘Rally for Leaf’, along with a couple of hundred community members of all ages.
Something seems amiss with the speed this supposed 40 year timeline project at Ormiston College proceeded beginning last Monday with mapped core koala habitat destroyed within hours.
Approval of the development was announced by LNP State Government on 22/5/26, neighbouring properties were advised the next day that clearing works would begin in coming weeks, then clearing works began within the next 48 hours at speed on Monday 25/5/26.
No wonder a near tragedy occurred, a tree with a koala in it very close to being cut down on the second day of clearing works with State Dept of
Environment seemingly not concerned by this incident after being reported.
It’s extremely disappointing that the College have shown a callous disregard for their resident koalas, 2 of whom (including Leaf) on site today, and our local State MP’s Amanda Stoker, Rebecca Young and Russel Field have turned their back on the communities concerns for this unacceptable destruction of what is supposedly the highest level of protected habitat in Qld.
Please continue to let our elected representatives know they must do better and this assault we’ve witnessed on a world loved endangered species is not on!

Videos of the moment a koala was detected in a tree about to be cut down at Ormiston College yesterday.
After the tree had flagging tape placed around it work continued for an hour until a protester went onto the site which shut work down for a period of time. KAG wrote to DETSI about this breach of development conditions but as of this afternoon had not received an acknowledgment or reply from State Dept of Environment and work continued today with the largest of the old growth koala trees on the site bulldozed. It is unknown where the koala is now but KAG maintains that thermal drones should have been used on this site where it is widely recognised that koalas inhabit.

Emotion was high at Ormiston College today when a tree was almost felled with a terrified koala in it. Disgustingly and against koala policy and approval conditions, work was halted briefly whilst the tree was flagged with tape then chainsawing continued in the immediate vicinity of the koala until the protester entered the site.
Shame on Ormiston College, the LNP State Govt (including local MP Amanda Stoker) and Federal Labor Minister Murray Watt who has been aware of this brewing situation and stood by and did nothing to protect an endangered species on the precipice of extinction in the Redlands.

This is how Ormiston College cares for its resident koalas. The workers cleared right up to a tree with a terrified koala sitting in it, paused momentarily then continued chain sawing in the immediate vicinity of the koala.
This is unacceptable and not compliant with conditions of the development.
KAG has written to the State Environment Dept for all works to cease immediately. A sad day for Ormiston koalas 😢🐨

Why are Ormiston College in such a hurry to get rid of Core Koala habitat when the community have been led to believe their plan was over the next 20 years?
Perhaps they are concerned that if the Federal Govt get involved they won’t get their extensive wish list that will remove a huge chunk of koala corridor, supposed to be in the highest level of protected ‘core koala habitat’.
Another sad day in Redlands where priorities by entities like this are so skewed with the welfare of resident koalas and concerns from majority of the community are simply swept aside. Does Ormiston College have a social license to undertake this action?
We suggest they do not!! 😢🐨
(Join the peaceful roadside protest in Delancey St tomorrow 26/5 morning 7.30am)
Also contact MP Amanda Stokers office as she supported this development from the word go.
