Byron Bay Hope Spot

Byron Bay Hope Spot The Byron Bay Hope Spot is a community for those who love and care for our sea country & marine park.

Hope Spots are special marine conservation areas that are vital to the oceans health, the Earth's blue heart! Stretching from the Brunswick River (28°32.251′S, 153°33.538′E) to the Richmond River, Ballina (28°52'34.1"S, 153°35'10.7"E), to 3 nautical miles offshore, including the coastal estuaries and creeks as well as Julian Rocks Nguthungulli Nature Reserve. This Hope Spot encompasses one of the

most diverse stretches of coastline in the world – a mixing ground of warm waters and tropical species from the Coral Sea brought down on the East Australian Current, and temperate species from the cooler waters of the southern Tasman Sea currents. This creates an incredibly biodiverse area that changes greatly with the seasons. Alongside an ancient indigenous history, this coast is treasured by the local community, which is why we've created a Hope Spot to be custodians now and into the future. Our Hope Spot is focused on:

• Connectivity & collaboration between organisations

• Support for science & citizen science

• Public education & community engagement

• Preservation & enhancement of our coastal environment

🐬 What an incredible couple of days! Our Citizen Science: Dolphins workshop was a huge success, with a beautiful day out on the water, an unforgettable snorkel alongside leopard sharks and a manta ray, and an amazing dolphin sighting — including baby dolphins 💙

Participants learned all about the Dolphin Watch citizen science project from Dr Liz Hawkins, then put their skills into practice on a real dolphin survey before snorkelling at Nguthungulli / Julian Rocks. Seeing our first trainees confidently recording dolphin behaviour and species was a highlight — proof of the power of ocean lovers contributing to real science.

This is the first in a series of workshops we're running in our local community to increase understanding of our unique marine wildlife, empower people to get involved in local research, and train leaders in citizen science here in our ocean community. 🌊

🌊 Calling all ocean lovers! If you’re keen to protect your local waters and learn how to contribute to real marine science, this hands-on citizen science dolphin workshop is for you. You’ll start by discovering how researchers study our local dolphins and whales — the species, the challenges they face, and how community data helps protect them. Then we head out on the water for a true field-science experience: a guided dolphin survey followed by a snorkel at Julian Rocks / Nguthungulli to explore the vibrant marine life below. No experience or equipment needed — just curiosity, passion, and a love for the sea 🐬💙

Workshop 1 will be all about our local dolphin species, and is happening on December 18/19. Places are extremely limited so head to the link to learn more and secure your spot -
