🐨 Australia’s Iconic Koalas 🇦🇺

Koalas are among Australia’s most beloved and recognizable animals. Found mainly along the eastern and southeastern regions of the country, these gentle marsupials spend most of their lives in eucalyptus trees, where they eat, sleep, and raise their young.

Despite often being called “koala bears,” koalas are not bears at all. They are marsupials, meaning they carry their babies, known as joeys, in a pouch. A koala can sleep up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy because eucalyptus leaves provide very little nutrition.

Koalas play an important role in Australia’s natural ecosystem. Their presence helps maintain healthy eucalyptus forests and supports biodiversity. From the forests of Queensland to the woodlands of New South Wales and Victoria, koalas have become a symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife and natural beauty.

However, koalas face many challenges, including habitat loss, bushfires, drought, and disease. Conservation efforts across Australia are helping to protect these remarkable animals and ensure future generations can continue to enjoy them in the wild.

Seeing a koala in its natural habitat is a truly unforgettable Australian experience. Their calm nature, fluffy grey fur, and gentle expressions make them one of the most treasured animals on Earth.

🐨💚 Protecting koalas means protecting Australia’s forests and wildlife for generations to come.

Ever wondered what’s hiding inside an old eucalyptus? Those rough trunks and quiet hollows are actually tiny wildlife apartments. Owls raise their young there, gliders tuck themselves into bark crevices, and parrots, possums, microbats and insects all rely on tree hollows that can take many decades to form.

When an old tree falls, an entire neighbourhood disappears with it. Protecting habitat isn’t always about planting new trees. Sometimes it’s about letting the old ones stand.

🌙🦉 Voices of the Night – Ecoacoustics & the Future of the Powerful Owl

Curious about what happens in the forest after dark? This fascinating workshop, brought to you by Australian Research Data Commons, dives into the hidden soundscape of our bushlands and how cutting-edge technology is helping protect one of Australia’s most impressive nocturnal predators — the Powerful Owl.

This hybrid event brings together researchers, conservationists and citizen scientists to explore how ecoacoustics, AI and community observations are transforming the way we monitor wildlife. Participants will learn how acoustic recorders capture owl calls at night and how these recordings are analysed to map where owls live and how their populations are changing.

You’ll also hear from experts involved in the Powerful Owl Project and discover how everyday nature lovers can contribute to real conservation outcomes.

📅 Saturday 21 March
🕘 9:00am – 4:30pm
📍 Forgan Smith Building (East), St Lucia
💻 Hybrid event – attend in person or online

Whether you're into wildlife, bushcare, citizen science or just love owls, this is a brilliant opportunity to learn how technology and community knowledge are coming together to protect these incredible birds.
