It's Biodiversity month across our 3 centres!

Each centre is celebrating the importance of biodiversity our native flora and fauna in their own special way. Kumbartcho Sanctuary & Nursery held a great workshop for kids and adults on Friday so they could get up close and personal with some of the fascinating creatures in our region. CREEC Environmental Education Centre has hosted a wattle walk with community and Macadamia plant surveys with school students.

Don't worry there is still plenty of fun coming up this September.

✨ The fireflies are back! ✨

Every night for the next few weeks the fireflies will emerge along Burpengary Creek. They are quite a magical beetle to behold (yes- they aren't actually a fly!). The fireflies can be seen from around dusk approximately 6pm for about 30 minutes.

Fireflies spend most of their life underground. Their lifecycle are egg, larvae and then adult beetle. As larvae they live amongst the top layer of soil and leaves consuming snails and worms. The adults do not have mouths so they cannot live very long as an adult beetle. Males are hurriedly trying to court females with their flashing tails (98% light, 2% heat being emitted from their light organs). While they are absolutely breathtaking it's important that we take steps to ensure they are able to mate and lay eggs for the next generation of fireflies and our next year of magical forest goodness.

We would like to keep you, your companions and the fireflies safe so please read below and check out the images.

✨Stay on the track. Fireflies live under the leaf litter along with snakes. This is for your protection and theirs. The fireflies are all through the forest you can enjoy them and stick to the path.
✨ If you have not visited the CREEC walking tracks (map below) please come during the day to get yourself situated
✨Please use a red torch, fireflies are sensitive creatures and your light can affect their mating. Please watch your step and stay on the tracks.
✨We recommend long pants and enclosed shoes and if possible, no insect repellent as this could be harmful to the fireflies
✨There may be snakes, spiders, leeches or ticks. Stay alert, be prepared and do a thorough check of your body after
✨The carpark and toilets remain open to approximately 8pm when security will arrive to lock the toilets and the carpark entry. Please depart prior to 8pm.

Happy World Macadamia Nut Day!

Did you know we have a macadamia plantation on site with 3 of the 4 species native to SEQ. The 3 that we have on site are all listed as vulnerable and are a threatened species. We were lucky enough to have Wild Macadamia Conservation come and celebrate with us and discuss the history of our plantation and goals for the future of this vital seedbank.

We also have Wild macadamias growing in our rainforest at Endeavour Bend. The macadamia Ternifolia or "Bauple nut" is a bitter nut that actually contains cyanide which is harmful to humans and some animals and should not be consumed for this reason. It is a special species we are very proud to have on site, growing in the wild. We are one of only a few locations in the City of Moreton Bay where you can find it in the wild. We are excited to assist University of the Sunshine Coast with their research project to help conservation efforts to protect this plant and learn more about it.

Come on down to CREEC and enjoy our plantation or find our wild macadamias on our rainforest walk. The plantation is a wonderful spot to wander through- located near our visitor centre and the walking track that leads to the forest. The trees are flowering at the moment, and we even have some with nuts developing which is early in the season. The nuts will be ready in a month or two.

If you can't make it down today- have a tasty macadamia treat instead!

Come into the centre and cool off with all our interactive displays, head into the nocturnal room for spotlighting and use our UV torches to spot things that glow in the dark. You can try our platypus scavenger hunt and win a prize upon completion. There will be nature themed craft as well.

🌳Join us tomorrow for a guided walk to celebrate national wattle day. 🌳

Meet in front of the centre and we will go for walk through the forest to spot wattles and other species. The birds and reptiles have been putting on a show so hopefully they come along too.

Spring has officially sprung!

Join us this month for Bush kindy, Park Tales, Yoga, Guided walks, school holiday fun and more. Located amongst remnant rainforest, wetlands and beside Burpengary Creek we are a wonderful conservation reserve ideal for nature play and exploration. We have an interactive visitor centre designed for all-ages, volunteer run cafe and nursery.

Our visitor centre will be closed Wednesday the 2nd of September due to a school excursion. The centre will be open from 1:30pm-3:00pm only on these days.

The facilities, playground and walking tracks will be open as usual. The boom gates and facilities open at 6am and close at approximately 7pm each day.

Happy national wattle day!

This day is extra special because we are located in Burpengary which comes from the Gubbi Gubbi word Burpen-gar which means home of the green wattle.

Come on down to CREEC and enjoy the wattles bloom and celebrate this day the right way. Join us on Thursday the 3rd of September at 10am for a guided walk through our forest tracks. We will spot the wattles and other species and definitely some bird friends. Our walk is flat and great for all ages and abilities. No bookings required.

🌿And that's a wrap! 🐸

We have had a fantastic month this August. From hosting 7 schools and several kindies from the region, to meeting some awesome science educators at the 2026 Science Educators Colloquium.

We taught students of all ages about life cycles, rock, hollows, creeks and erosion and met some adorable native critters with Geckoes Wildlife.

Our forest has not been sitting still either. With this warmer weather we have been seeing lots of critters coming out of hiding for some sunshine, including our brush turkeys, goannas and bearded dragons, and the birds are singing up a storm!

Thank you to everyone that visited us this month and we hope to see everyone here for a fantastic September!
