And just like that… the Last Hurrah weekend has come to an end. 💙

What an emotional, beautiful and unforgettable few days it has been.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us — from Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra and beyond. It meant so much to see Eesti Maja filled once again with laughter, stories, dancing, singing, hugs and generations of our community reconnecting together.

Many spent hours exploring the archives, reminiscing over photographs and memories stretching back decades. Others gathered in the Beer Hall, caught up with old friends, enjoyed the NOËP concert on Saturday and Family Day on Sunday, joined the community singalongs and filled the dance floor with joy one more time.

The speeches by Ambassador Jaan Reinhold, Matti and Rein Kiviväli, Hilja Toom and Vanessa Roosmets reminded us of something deeply important — while Eesti Maja holds a special place in our hearts, our community is bigger than these walls. Our community is the people, the friendships, the traditions and the care we carry forward together.

And we certainly felt that this weekend — in the loud and quiet “I love yous”, the warm hugs and the moments shared.

To everyone who volunteered, performed, helped organise, cooked, stacked chairs, carried boxes or simply came along to be part of it all — thank you. You helped make this weekend incredibly special.

And this is not the end. The Melbourne Estonian Society will continue inviting you to events and gatherings while we pack up, regroup and search for a new home for our community.

You are always welcome in our ranks. 💙

More on the Last Hurrah - beautifully written by Kristel Alla

Day one of the Last Hurrah has begun — and Melbourne Estonian House is already full of memories, reunions, archive-table discoveries and very respectable FOMO. Come Saturday and Sunday before everyone else tells you how wonderful it was.

And just like that..
.Friday is nearly wrapped up. What a beautiful start to the weekend it has been.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us today. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces enjoying the Archive displays, reconnecting with friends, sharing stories, and celebrating our community together.

But we’re not done yet! Saturday and Sunday still have so much in store.

The Archive will continue to be open from 10am daily, with free entry and plenty to explore, including photos, articles, films, and handicrafts celebrating the many groups connected to Eesti Maja.

Saturday highlights:

🍺 From 12pm–5pm, Eesti Maja transforms into a lively Beer Hall with Estonian beer, bar service, and European pub-style food available for purchase.

🎶 Then in the evening, keep the energy going with the NOËP concert - one of the major highlights of the weekend! (Ticketed event.)

Sunday highlights:

💃🏻🕺🏼Wrap up the weekend with a warm and welcoming Family Day. Enjoy choir and folk dance performances, community activities, speeches, and a special moment as we look ahead to the final Tuljak at Eesti Maja.

🍴🥨The kitchen opens from 12pm with Estonian finger food available before performances and speeches begin at 2pm.

Need a break during your visit? Kobi Kafe ☕️ across the road is ready with great coffee to keep you fuelled throughout the weekend.

We can’t wait to celebrate the rest of this special weekend with you all.

The family of Estonian Australian artist and writer Gunnar Neeme is offering books from his personal Estonian-language collection to the community. A collection shaped over decades of reading, thinking, and staying connected to Estonia from afar.

The Estonian Archives in Australia have already selected a number of titles, and the rest are being shared more widely. It’s less of a clear-out and more of a quiet handover from one Australian Estonian home to another.

For more information on how you can own these books, visit the HEIA article by clicking here: https://eesti.org.au/2026/05/01/from-gunnar-neemes-shelves-to-yours/

PS! Books will be available until Friday, 12 June 2026, or until allocated.

For decades, these memories lived quietly in homes across Melbourne — passed down, kept safe, and remembered. Now gathered in one place, the Melbourne Estonian archive opens for a rare Last Hurrah display. Here’s the story behind it.
