Kristine’s story is a powerful reminder that life doesn’t always follow the script we imagined, and that is especially the case when parenting a young person with an eating disorder.

Her journey with her son, Sam, is raw, honest and deeply familiar to so many carers: the pressure to “get it right”, the guilt when things fall apart, and the courage it takes to rebuild a new kind of plan based on agency, flexibility, and compassion.

At the end of her story, Kris shares her Top 5 Tips for other parents walking this path. They’re practical, grounding, and full of heart:

💛 Kristine’s Top 5 Tips for Carers
1️⃣ Get chickens - they’ll eat the uneaten food and reward you with eggs!
2️⃣ Set boundaries - well‑meaning family and friends will have opinions; protect your energy so you can focus on your young person.
3️⃣ Be the cheerleader, not the captain - you’re on their team, not against them.
4️⃣ Forget what others think - no one else carries the heartbreak, fear and exhaustion you do. Release the guilt.
5️⃣ Stay connected - whether it’s other eating disorder parents, yoga, book club or darts… don’t lose yourself. You need stamina, support and moments of joy.

Kristine’s story is a reminder that plans can change and that’s okay. What matters is walking alongside your young person with love, flexibility and hope.

💜 If you’re a carer, you’re not alone. EDFA is here to support you.

“Helping families find their power when they feel most powerless.” — Alanna

Right now, too many eating disorder carers are being left to carry everything on their own.

They are the ones holding hope through the hardest moments of eating disorder recovery often without the support they need.

This month, we’re coming together to Support the Supporters.

At Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA), we’re here to support the supporters by providing connection, education and care to families and carers when they need it most.

Because when carers are supported, recovery becomes more possible.

Millions of Australians care for a loved one with an eating disorder but too often, they do it without support.

Featured in the Yorke Peninsula Country Times, EDFA Executive Director Jane Rowan and carer, advocate and Strong Enough author Teresa Orth shared insights during their recent regional South Australia visit, highlighting the very real challenges families face.

“Many carers experience chronic stress, social isolation, financial strain, and exhaustion while trying to support someone they love through an incredibly complex illness,” Jane told the newspaper. “In regional areas, that burden can be even greater because families often have fewer specialist services nearby and less access to support.”

This regional spotlight is a powerful reminder: carers need recognition, resources and support. 💜

EDFA is the only national organisation providing support, education, advocacy, and counselling SOLELY for carers and families impacted by an eating disorder, making this work more critical than ever.

Andrea & Bryce share a reminder that recovery is rarely walked alone.

In Strong Enough, their story sits alongside other carers who describe what it meant to navigate an eating disorder as a team, not just within the immediate family, but by leaning on community, relationships, and shared knowledge.

Their experience highlights something important: reaching out matters. Support networks, lived experience, and trusted guidance can make a real difference when things feel overwhelming.

"The path to recovery became visible to me once I had accepted that this illness was a mental illness. This mental illness changed our family. It forced me to find my
strength, and in doing so, I helped my daughter find hers" says Andrea.

With Men’s Health Month underway, Bryce’s role in their story is a powerful reminder that men are deeply impacted by eating disorders too, as carers, partners, parents, and loved ones. Their voices and experiences deserve space, support, and recognition.

For those going through it, or trying to understand how to support someone they love, this book offers both hope and perspective through the voices of 12 carers who have lived it.

June is Recharge 4 Recovery month, and across Australia incredible people are fundraising to give strength to those who hold others through the hardest moments of eating disorder recovery. 💜

More than 1.1 million people are living with an eating disorder in Australia and about 4.4 million carers are supporting them. When you register for Recharge 4 Recovery in June you will be recognising these carers on the frontline of recovery and helping them rest, recharge and feel supported.

Recovery is never easy, but it can be easier when eating disorder carers have the right support, information and resources at the right time.

If you’d like to support the supporters, you can donate to Recharge 4 Recovery or register to fundraise today to help raise awareness and hope.

Thank you for helping us recharge carers, and in turn, recharge recovery. https://recharge4recovery.org.au/donate
