🥳Happiest of birthdays today, July 14, to this iconic small business stayer.
🙌🏻 For 135 years Millers Department Store has serviced the Benalla community.
One of Benalla’s longest-running family businesses, Millers first opened on 14 July 1891 and has continuously served Benalla and the North East region ever since.
Generations of local families have shopped at Millers for clothing, homewares, haberdashery, wool, craft supplies, workwear and specialty items that are often difficult to find elsewhere.
The store’s reputation has been built on personal service, local knowledge and long-term relationships with customers across Benalla and surrounding districts.
The business has been owned by the Grubb family since 1932, when Alfred Grubb purchased the store. Today it remains family-owned and operated by sisters Sheryl Coughlin and Anita Grubb.
Surviving for 135 years through economic downturns, changing consumer habits, the rise of shopping centres, online retail and industry disruptions demonstrates a remarkable ability to adapt while retaining traditional values.
In 2026, Millers was named a finalist in the ARC National Small Business Awards, recognised for outstanding retailing, customer service and community connection.
The recognition highlighted how a regional department store can remain relevant by combining quality products, specialist ranges and exceptional customer service.
It’s been operating from its distinctive heritage Art Deco building on the corner of Bridge and Carrier Streets known as ‘Millers Corner’ since 1933.
