This week, we’re remembering the remarkable Dolly Parton, the founder of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and celebrating the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.

Dolly believed deeply in the power of books and their ability to open a world of possibilities for children. Through the Imagination Library, that belief continues to bring the joy of reading into homes around the world - including right here in Benalla.

As the September Imagination Library books arrive in the mail, we’d love all our Benalla Imagination Library members to us celebrate Dolly’s legacy by sharing what the program means to their family.

Congratulations to Youth Live4Life! In August the rural youth mental health and su***de prevention organisation was announced as winner in the Mental Health Program Excellence category at the prestigious Mental Health Service Awards of Australia and New Zealand.

The award recognises an organisation or team that operates with the focus on a whole community or population. For a small team of staff, community partners, coordinators and support workers to have its work recognised at a national level is testament to the extraordinary reach and impact achieved in the 16 years since Live4Life was first established.

We are proud to support Live4Life in Benalla and hope that this award will help to raise their profile and bring their valuable programs to more rural communities.

The Life Simulator game that has captured the imaginations of our Movti8 students for Term 3 came to an end this week. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows – the last episode in this interactive game of life had a few curve balls for students to deal with.

A surprise visit from their landlord, a sick pet and a house guest outstaying their welcome kept students in decision-making mode right till the end.

The take-away? Living out of home is harder than it looks! Most participants decided that they weren’t quite ready for the leap to share house living for real!

Tomorrow Today is proud to support NE Tracks LLEN’s Tradies Toolbox Roadshow at Benalla P-12 College and Australian Christian College - Benalla.

The Roadshow brings together local tradespeople, apprentices, employers and training providers to share information about the career possibilities in the trades.
Students will access practical information about employment pathways, trade training, school-based apprenticeships and apprenticeships.

“Tomorrow Today has been a long-term supporter of NETracksLLEN’s Hands on Trades Expo which has been very successful over a number of years. But attending an event of that nature puts added financial and staffing pressure on schools;” said Sally Matheson, Tomorrow Today Education Benalla Program Manager. “The Tradies Toolbox Roadshow brings information, resources and first-hand knowledge directly to schools, eliminating those barriers. These events will provide valuable information for Benalla’s young people looking to the future.”

The first Benalla Roadshow was on Thursday 27 August at Benalla P-12 College and the second will be on Wednesday 16 September at Australian Christian College.

The best place to celebrate Book Week is of course the place in town with the most books! The Library!

This week our PEEP sessions have been at Benalla Library and it’s been inspiring to see so many of our families (and staff and volunteers) embracing the book week tradition and coming dressed in some amazing Book Week outfits!

Our Junior Anganya students are investigating totems and the seasons as part of an ongoing project.

They used the story “Come Together” by Isiah Firebrace as a springboard for this work. Students worked on an artwork which incorporated the Badja Bayaderra (freshwater long-necked turtle) the totem of the Yorta Yorta people.

They also discovered that many First Nations peoples recognise six (or more) seasons (instead of the European four). These seasons are tied closely to the local natural environment.

For Yorta Yorta people the seasonal shifts are read directly from the wetlands, the cycles of the Murray River and other ecological indicators like bird migrations and the flowering of specific plants.

We were absolutely delighted to learn that Anganya student and 2024 Connect9 mentee, Ella had won third place in her category in the Friends of Benalla Library Writing Competition.

She joined many other talented amateur writers at Benalla Library on Wednesday afternoon for the awards ceremony.

Ella participates in Anganya’s accelerated learning program with tutor Annalie every week at Waminda Community House. Congratulations Ella on your creativity and enthusiasm! It is fantastic to see your hard work paying off!

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Dolly Parton yesterday.

Dolly Parton was many things; an international country music icon, singer, songwriter, storyteller, actor, humanitarian and philanthropist. She was an ambassador for kindness and acceptance. But perhaps her greatest legacy of all is her Imagination Library.

Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library in 1995, inspired in large part by her father, who could not read or write. Her idea was very simple, send a child a good book every month for free. Inspire in them a love of reading. What began as a small program in her home state of Tennessee became a world-wide phenomenon. By the end of 2025 it had distributed over 300 million books to children aged 0-5 across five countries. She made reading something special for millions of children.

In Australia the program commenced in 2013 and now 45,000 books are distributed every month to Australian children. We are proud to be part of that program here in Benalla.

Dolly’s family has requested that anyone wishing to honour Dolly’s incredible legacy should donate to her Imagination Library.
