Echidnas are perhaps one of the least cuddly of Australia’s native animals, although you could argue that they come much higher on the snuggle list than our vast range of deadly snakes!

This week our junior Anganya students learned that the echidna is one of only two mammals in the world that lays eggs. The other is the Platypus. They discovered that Echidnas are also found in Papua New Guinea, and that there are short and long-beaked species of this spiky monotreme. They read about Koko the light-quilled Echidna and then engaged their creative skills when they modelled their own Echidna from air-dry clay.

Scarves, hula hoops, balls and balancing were the order of the day at Creative Movement on Wednesday.

These fun sessions for children aged 2-5 help them build their gross motor skills while delighting in the freedom to express their creativity through music and movement.

For the last two weeks our regular facilitator Tegan has been away and we’re grateful to our school-based apprentice, Charlotte, for stepping into the role with enthusiasm.

Have you reserved your place at our Community Celebration?

The Tomorrow Today Community Celebration is on Thursday 29 October from 5-7pm at Benalla P-12 College Avon St Campus.

We would love to see our volunteers, participants, donors, partners and supporters join us to celebrate all that our community has achieved throughout the year.

We’ll be launching our 2026 Annual Report and you’ll hear from our new CEO, Jen Jackson and some of our program participants too.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Have you enrolled your child in the Benalla Imagination Library yet? If you’d like your child, aged 0-2, to receive a FREE age-appropriate book every month, then enrol today!

It’s a fantastic program designed to foster early literacy.

To receive their first book in December, your child needs to be enrolled by Tuesday 3 November.

Congratulations to our senior Anganya students, Ella and Ebony who both celebrated milestones this month.

Ella and Ebony participated in the Benalla P-12 College debutante ball. After months of practice they absolutely shone at this special event. The meaning of the ‘deb’ has changed over the years and instead of being the introduction to society for wealthy young women it is now an opportunity for young people to learn a new skill, build their confidence and be supported by their community.

Ella also shone in the sporting arena where she placed second in the multi-class shot put and long jump at the regional athletics competition in Albury last week.

Congratulations Ella for your hard work – it has certainly paid off!

A big welcome back to all our PEEP families this week! We hit the ground running (or is that riding?) this week when our groups met at Benalla’s new pump track.

Children brought along their bikes, scooters and balance bikes to zoom round the track. Those without wheels didn’t miss out - their legs and feet got a work out instead!

This term we’re planning on spending more PEEP time outside – expect lots of gross motor activities as the weather warms up.

The cheeky butcher birds always tease Guluu the magpie…what can he do change the game?

This week junior Anganya students read the dreamtime story of Mad Magpie written and illustrated by Greg Dreise.

They learned how Guluu overcame his trouble with the butcher birds by seeking the advice of the Elders, focussing on his strengths and the calmness of the water.

Students extended this learning to themselves, thinking about the things that they do well and the things they do to help them feel calm.

They then wrote these strengths and actions on their own magpie poster which they will add to over time.
