Big dreams start with seeing what’s possible.

This week, Year 10 and 11 students from FCJ College travelled to The University of Melbourne as part of our senior school university bus trips. For many young people from regional communities, opportunities to visit universities and explore campus life can be limited by distance, transport and financial barriers.

Four former FCJ College students spoke to the group about their experiences living on campus, university life and how they adjusted to living in Melbourne.

These experiences give students the chance to step onto a university campus, explore lecture theatres, accommodation and student spaces, and imagine themselves there in the future. Because sometimes, seeing it for yourself is the first step to believing you belong there.

The Victorian State Treasurer Hon Jaclyn Symes MP dropped by for a visit on Thursday as part of her day in Benalla.

She spent some time with a few of our PEEP families, hearing about their experiences at PEEP and the value and connection they have gained from participating in the program. More importantly, everyone had fun doing the Hokey Pokey!

Minister Symes then heard about the growth of the Education Benalla Program from EBP Manager Sally Matheson and board members, Louise Pearce (chair) and Rosie Koop (EBP Convenor) before joining Tomorrow Today staff for lunch to hear more about our work in Benalla and the biggest challenges that we see facing the broader community.

It was great to spend time with the Minister, who grew up in Benalla and still has strong ties to our community. We are fortunate to have the ongoing support of the Department of Education, Victoria who helps to fund the EBP.

If your child could have a tool that would help them for the rest of their life, would you want them to have it?

This ‘tool’ doesn’t need power, or the internet to work, it has no moving parts, never requires cleaning, recharging or an upgrade.
It will make their life easier, help them make and keep friends and jobs and improve their opportunities.

You likely already have this tool and you use it every day. Best of all it’s FREE!
You may be surprised to learn, this mystery tool is:
MANNERS!
This week at PEEP we started our sessions with a fun guessing game before we introduced the conversation about what manners mean to us, how expectations have changed over time and how modelling these behaviours helps our children learn.

There’s some more info here: https://theconversation.com/how-do-children-learn-good-manners-237133

Did you know that our local CFA group has more than 500 volunteers? Our local emergency services are a huge part of the Benalla community and this week our Connect9 participants visited the CFA and Victoria Police to learn more about the work they do to protect everyone.

As always, the CFA and Police members were generous with their time and knowledge as they showed everyone around their facilities. It was really interesting to see the new police station up close (but not too close!!) and our mentees asked some great questions.

Thank you to Benalla Fire Brigade CFA and Victoria Police for sharing your time with us this week.

Last Friday, Year 5 and 6 students from Benalla P-12 College, Peranbin Primary College Baddaginnie, Broken Creek Primary School and Australian Christian College - Benalla got to experience the night sky from inside a building!!

To complement our Year 5&6 careers program we funded the Cosmodome to come to Benalla with a mobile planetarium. The hour-long sessions immersed students in projected images of our solar system, the core of planet Earth, the sun and the moon. There were many ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ as the giant displays ignited imaginations and sparked curiosity. These experiences help students begin to imagine what’s possible especially in the STEM field.

This May the Full Impact Squad has been busy out in the community. On 17 May they attended the IDAHOBIT flag raising ceremony hosted by Benalla Rural City Council . IDAHOBIT is the international day against homophobia, biphobia, discrimination and transphobia. It’s aims are to celebrate LGBTQIA+ people, raise awareness about the discrimination they still face, and promote inclusion and equality. The Squad is a diverse and inclusive group who were there to show their support and allyship.

This month the Squad were invited to attend a Benalla Rotary Club meeting. Pandora, Alex and Levi shared some information about the Full Impact Squad, its aims and activities. They also fielded a few curly questions from our local Rotarians!

They’ve also been busy planning for their next youth event – if you’re aged 11-19 then get your marshmallows ready – more info coming soon!

Research shows that when people are connected to their community their physical and mental health is enhanced. Connection improves their sense of belonging and their self-esteem and confidence grows. But for some families, making those connections and identifying local support networks is challenging.

Our ConnectParent program is designed to help those families build local connections and feel confident in their parenting abilities. Families are paired with a volunteer Community Connector to help them navigate support services in and other social opportunities in Benalla.

We have a three new volunteer Community Connectors who have just completed training to support Benalla’s new parents and parents-to-be. They will join the 16 other trained Connectors who are already in the community. Congratulations to our new Community Connectors - Tanya, Jacquie and Bec.
