VICTORIAN POULTRY FARMS ORDERED TO LOCKDOWN TO PREVENT H5N1 BIRD FLU SPREAD

"Victorian poultry producers have been ordered to house their birds by the state government in a move to prevent the spread of H5N1 bird flu.

The measures will apply to poultry owners with more than 50 birds in metropolitan Melbourne and select areas of concern.

The housing orders will last for an initial period of 14 days, with the government to monitor the situation as it develops."

Testing confirmed a further 20 cases of H5N1avian influenza in Victoria on Friday, all in greater crested terns along the state's south-west coast.

Nutrients in our Food are Declining!

"For the last few decades, the nutrient content of our crops has been declining. In the late 90s, the US Department of Agriculture found the vitamin C content of lemons had decreased by almost a third over the previous 22 years. Calcium in carrots, an important source especially for non-meat eaters, had reduced, on average, by more than a quarter. Vitamin A in bananas was down by 57%. The mineral content of wheat has declined by between 20-30% since the 1960s."

We saw a resurgence of people gardening and raising chickens during the lockdowns, and now we are seeing more growth as people realise the system they have been relying on, can't always be relied upon. Interesting reading.

The tenets of permaculture are attracting a new generation of home gardeners. It's perhaps no surprise, considering the movement has firm roots in the world's last oil crisis in the 1970s.
