Well it certainly has turned to winter with the weather changing to include cold and wet conditions. Tuesdays scroungers was played in reasonable conditions with 11 players and Brian Baldwin coming out the winner and Ray Wright runner up.
Keith’s Friday’s weather conditions were not so kind with rain interfering so a reduced number of ends in the second game was needed. Winners of the day were the combination of John Bruce and Tex Penna with + 15 over the two games. Runners up were Fred Pinnuck and Peter Russell with plus 10. The lucky draw winners name that came up was not not present although Carol Cox’s name was next up so was very close to winning.
Several announcements this week so I will list them for all to read and take in.
Number one is that the greens will be sprayed (weather permitted) on Thursday 25th. June so will be out of action for that day. Any help would be appreciated on the day.
Number two is that Medley pairs is on this Tuesday so names down for this event please.
Number three is another reminder that memberships are due on 30th. June.
Number four is another reminder to keep the 23rd. August try bowls day in your thoughts and ask your friends or relatives, in fact anyone you are talking to, to come along on the day to try bowls. It will be held on a Sunday morning with a BBQ afterwards so remember to ask anybody of any age to come along.
Number five is to advise all our members that opening day for the 2026/27 season will be on the 29th. August where rounds one and two of the club fours will be played. As a bonus our new shirts will be distributed to all those playing pennant next season and to those who have purchased shirts.
Expressions of interest are being called to anyone, Male or Female, who may wish to assist the Murray playing area match committee so give this a thought if you are at all keen to be involved in this field. Details are available from Archie Ellis or Ruth Burnett and need to be forwarded by 14th. July.
And finally the Cobram Soroptimist club will be holding a movie day on Wednesday the 12th. August at the Cobram theatre followed by afternoon tea. The movie to watch is called Holy Days and will feature artists such as Miriam Margolyes, Jackie Weaver and Judy Davis so could be a good movie to see. Cost will be $20.00 with names to Jen Gaylard on 0427 320 388

Runners up were Ruth Burnett and Geoff Sloan with plus 9. Best first game winners were Fred Pinnuck and a visitor in Ralph Jans with plus 3 and best second game winners were Archie Ellis and Fran Thatcher with plus 7. Lucky draw name from the spinning wheel for $50.00 was Kevin Henderson but as he was not present it carries on for next week.

On Friday we again had Keith’s Friday and we welcomed new member Geoff Sloan. Winning combination this week were Des Toohey and Fran Thatcher with plus 13, runners up were Gordon Bennett and Fred Pinnuck with plus 6. Best first game winners were Geoff Sloane and Tex Penna with plus 12 and best second game winners were Peter Russell and Gavan Cullen with plus 11. Liz Ewing’s name came out in the draw for the $50.00 prize but misses out as she is currently overseas. Bad luck Lizzy.
A reminder to all, that memberships become due at the end of the month. Please complete the membership forms that have been forwarded out in full and take them to the Sporties for payment. Forms are also available at the Sporties if needed.
Ladies Monday social bowls have finished, but ladies are encouraged to come along on Mondays for a roll even if it means just for a cuppa and a chat.

Well goodbye Autumn, hello Winter.
The weather though has been very good so far but wet days are forecast for the days ahead so beware. Last Tuesday the running of the Medley pairs was played with a good competitive field present. Winners had to be decided on percentage after wins and ends won were equal between Nan Smith with Glenyce McKay from Berrigan and Peter Russell with John Sullivan from Barooga with the home side winners. Best first game winners were Gary Mott and Ziggy Remfield, best second game winners were Graeme Clements and R Illis with John Bruce and Kevin Kennedy best last game.
Keith’s Friday had 16 players attend, thank you to those that made the effort. Winners of the day were the combination of Val Toohey and Archie Ellis with plus 11, runners up with plus 2 were Fred Pinnock and John Crump. Best first game winners were Marita O’Kane and Des Toohey with plus 3 and best second game winners were Kevin Kennedy and Peter Russell with plus 8. The lucky draw prize of $50.00 went off when Fred Pinnuck’s name came up on the spinning of the wheel.
This Tuesday the 2nd June we have scroungers being played so names down for this if you wish to play.
Following the first new committee meeting held Friday and in accordance with our constitution we are now calling for people to express their interest in becoming a selector for both Mid Week and Saturday pennant. We all complain about selection so now is your chance to do something about it and nominate for a position. Contact secretary John with your intention.
Memberships become due at the start of June and forms have been emailed out. Please complete these forms in full and present to the Sports Club for payment. It is important that all fields are completed as we use these in our database of members.
One item from the new committee is that we plan a new bowlers, learn to play day starting on Sunday 23rd. August at 10.30 am. Please encourage any of your friends, neighbours or grandchildren to come along and enjoy a fun day. All are welcome with equipment supplied and a BBQ lunch provided.

Not quite as busy this week as last week and the weekend but we did have the scroungers on Tuesday in which it got down to the two John’s playing out the final. John Bruce and John Sullivan fought out the final with John Sullivan winning overall so his handicap of 6 shots starts the next time he plays.
Its time for all of us to start thinking of inviting someone you know down to have a bowl. We need our existing members to invite your friends to come and enjoy the joy of bowls. We do intend to have a learn to bowls day soon so now is the time to put your thinking caps on and think of who could you invite to such a day. More on this later but have a think about who you could invite.
Keith’s Friday was again run this past Friday but with disappointing numbers. We really have to look at ourselves and wonder if we want to support social bowls. Social bowls is where our members of various grades of skills can come and have a fun time bowling so if you want this to continue then you have to make yourself available to play. It is on every Friday at 1.30pm with names in by phone or by putting your name on the sheet provided on the notice board by 12.30pm. Remember the club is for members to enjoy bowling but if you don’t support those who put the effort in to provide social bowls then there may well be none provided and that would be a shame. Winners of Keith’s Friday this week were the combination of Marita O’Kane and Peter Russell with runners up being Gavan Cullin and Graeme Hickey. The lucky draw winners name that was selected on the spinning wheel this week was Rae Koch but misses out as she was not present.
This Tuesday we have the running of Medley pairs at 10.00am.

Well this weekend saw the playing of our annual triples tournament which was a great success with 84 bowlers playing from all over Victoria and from N.S.W. as well.
The weekend went well and the weather was kind to us all. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the weekend the success it was. Thanks go also to our sponsors who without them we could not have done so well.
Winners of the tournament overall were the trio from Gippsland: Daniel Earl, Mick Coram and Dave Barry. Runners up were the team from Brunswick consisting of Ethan Miller, Darren Morris and Stephen North, and coming in at third place were the team from Katandra West lead by Merv Hannaford, Phil Thorne and Rob Glover. Prizes went down to sixth place so a lot of bowlers went away happy. Best last game winners were the team of Chris Philpot, Brett Wright and Doug Larkin with plus 10 on a countback from Andrew Hill, Norm Barnes and Paul Carter from Finley.
During the week we had medley pairs played but no results to report. This coming week will be scroungers to be played so come along for this event in Tuesday.
A reminder to all the lady bowlers that Monday morning social bowls is still on from 10.00am each and every Monday so get along for a bowl and a chat.

Life memberships were awarded to Colin Campbell, Des Toohey, Elaine Blizzard and Geoff Brentnall and congratulations go out to all these worthy recipients.

There was no social bowls on Friday, as everyone attended the Murray bowls presentation day at Numurkah where our mid week pennant division one team received their plaque and shield after winning the premiership this past season. All state winners were also presented with their trophies and shields and our own Ian Smethurst as well as Chris Philpot and Roger Carter were there to received their shields. A special feature of the day was the induction of Marj McDonald to the Hall of Fame.
Classic triples is now not so far away with final preparations being made to ensure a wonderful event being run. If you haven’t yet got your entry in then do so this week please.
Scroungers is now being played with the first day being this Tuesday and every Tuesday fortnight thereafter so names down please for this event. Keith’s Friday where we play draw for partners, 3 bowl pairs will be played Friday before before the A.G.M. and presentation night so names down for this also. Names will be taken up to 12.30 for a 1.30 pm start. Please note that a sausage sizzle will be provided after the A.G.M.
