We pause to honour National Sorry Day (May 26th), remembering the Stolen Generations and all who were impacted. Today marks 29 years since the tabling of the "Bringing them Home" report, which was a landmark truth-telling document that detailed the extent of the atrocities inflicted on the Stolen Generations, and made recommendations for appropriate reparations to survivors and their families.
"Saying sorry matters" - to acknowledge the truth and show compassion.
Tomorrow, May 27th, is the 59th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, which advanced constitutional rights for First Nations peoples. The referendum proposed to change the Constitution so that Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted in the census, and conferred power to the Australian Government to make federal laws for First Nations peoples.
