OeAD - Austria’s agency for education and internationalisation

The OeAD is Austria’s agency for education and internationalisation. It has supported and cross-linked people and institutions in education, science, research and culture for 60 years with its future-oriented programmes. The OeAD’s fields of activity are in Austria, Europe and international priority countries. The OeAD acts as an interface to educational options for all phases of life – from kindergarten and schools to higher education and science, vocational education and training and adult education. The agency's most important instruments are European and international exchange and transnational mobility. Thus, as a national agency, the OeAD is responsible, among other things, for the implementation of Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps in Austria. The OeAD is a non-profit limited liability organisation (GmbH) of the federal government. Its activities are funded by the Republic of Austria, in particular by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Family and Youth (BMAFJ), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the European Commission.

🎧 In this podcast on Radio Austria One Ö1, former scholar Paul Yillia talks about his extraordinary journey, the role of science in fighting poverty, the challenges of energy access and how basic infrastructure can transform lives.

🎓 His journey began with a scholarship financed by Austrian Development Agency. He earned his PhD at TU Wien, led a research group at IIASA, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg and served on the advisory group of Sustainable Energy for All, an initiative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

🇸🇱 After 25 years in academia and international research, Paul Yillia made a remarkable decision: five years ago, he returned to his home country, Sierra Leone, to put his knowledge and experience to work where they are needed most.

🎓 Congratulations, Dr. Florence Nansumbi! 🇺🇬

Florence successfully defended her PhD at BOKU University, on 14 October 2026!

🌿 Her research explored how land use and topography influence carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling, as well as stream metabolism in tropical headwater streams in Uganda.

Her findings highlight the potential of functional indicators to assess freshwater ecosystem integrity and contribute to a better understanding of tropical freshwater ecosystems.

Florence acknowledges the support of the Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development (APPEAR) and the SWAQ-Uganda project, which contributed to her doctoral studies and research. She also extends her sincere gratitude to her supervisors at BOKU University and Makerere University for their invaluable guidance and support throughout her PhD journey.

☀️ Before we head into autumn, let’s look back at a special summer moment in the Wachau Valley!
On 17 July 2026, around 50 international OeAD scholarship holders explored Melk Abbey, enjoyed a relaxing boat trip with stunning views of the Danube Valley, and strolled through the historic streets of Dürnstein and Krems.

🌏 But an international study experience is about more than research! It’s also about discovering a new country, exploring different perspectives, and building connections that last

🤝 Our events play an important role in strengthening the OeAD scholarship community, giving participants the opportunity to build friendships and professional networks.

As one participant put it:
“Integrating scholars with others and helping them feel at home while introducing them to the country's history, culture, and inclusivity is the takeaway from the event.”

🌍 Alumni Talk with Dr. Zipporah Gichana

On 15 October 2026 Zipporah shared insights into her academic and professional journey from Kenya to Austria and back.

🌱 The talk explored sustainable aquaculture in East Africa, highlighted the power of international research collaboration, intercultural exchange, and global academic partnerships.

Drawing on her experience as APPEAR scholars at BOKU University and her role as an Africa-UniNet representative, Zipporah emphasized how international education and cooperation can drive innovation, strengthen research capacity, and foster sustainable development across continents. 🤝

After a little break: Today is Monday, and we're excited to celebrate another APPEAR scholar milestone with you🏆 # Great research deserves recognition!

Congratulations to Seda Adamyan, APPEAR scholar and PhD candidate at the Medical University of Vienna, for winning the Best Oral Presentation Prize at the International Conference on Biodiversity, Conservation and Climate Change in Yerevan! 👏

Her research explores zoonotic vector-borne diseases in Armenia through a One Health approach, connecting human, animal and environmental health. 🔬🌍

The award is also a great example of what international academic cooperation can achieve: connecting expertise, strengthening research networks and supporting the next generation of researchers.
