AI is already transforming healthcare — but what could it mean for osteopathic practice?

Meet Daniel Heed, DO, BSc (Hons), MSc (eHealth), an experienced osteopath and educator with a strong interest in eHealth, artificial intelligence and digital health, and co-founder of Elevyo Health.

At the OsEAN Open Forum 2026, Daniel will explore how AI could augment — rather than replace — clinical intuition and contribute to the future of osteopathic practice.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫?

After completing OsEAN’s PGCert in Osteopathic Education, Esther Verstraten shared some of her reflections on the programme:

“Teaching is so much more than transferring knowledge. With changing learning environments, digital tools and AI, our role continues to evolve: facilitating learning, encouraging critical thinking and, perhaps most importantly, inspiring lifelong learners.”

She also reflected on how the programme connected her own experience with educational theory and research:

“It was fascinating to connect something I had already been practising for years with educational theory and research, and to discover how reflection can also shape us as teachers.”

𝐀 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐆𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭

This summer, the first participants in OsEAN’s Postgraduate Certificate in Osteopathic Education completed the programme.

The course started in November 2025 as something completely new for OsEAN: a teacher training programme developed specifically for osteopathic educators and validated by the University of Plymouth.

After four weekends of learning, discussion, reflection and plenty of work in between, our first cohort has reached the end of that journey.

We are very happy to celebrate this moment with them — and proud to see the first OsEAN PGCert in Osteopathic Education cohort complete the programme.

What remains uniquely human in osteopathy?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing healthcare, education and professional practice. It can process information, identify patterns and support decision-making.

Yet osteopathy has always been about more than information.

It involves observation, communication, touch, experience, clinical judgement and the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient.

As AI continues to evolve, which elements of osteopathic practice should remain fundamentally human?

We look forward to exploring this question together with educators, practitioners, researchers and students at the 10th Open Forum for Osteopathic Education Conference.

Artificial intelligence is already influencing healthcare, research and education.

But how should osteopathic education respond?

As AI becomes increasingly present in teaching, assessment, clinical reasoning and professional practice, educators and practitioners are faced with important questions:

• What should future osteopaths learn in the age of AI?
• How can technology support learning without replacing experience?
• What remains uniquely human in osteopathic education?
• How do we prepare students for a profession that is rapidly changing?

These are some of the questions that will be explored at the 10th Open Forum for Osteopathic Education Conference.
