🎃 Halloween or All Saints' Day? In Austria, you'll find a bit of both.

Halloween has become increasingly popular in Austria, especially among children and younger people. On 31 October, you might see costumes, carved pumpkins and Halloween parties – although it isn't a traditional Austrian holiday.

The following day, 1 November, is All Saints' Day (Allerheiligen) and an official public holiday. It has a very different character: many people visit cemeteries and remember family members and friends who have passed away.

So if you're new to Austria, don't be surprised if Halloween decorations are followed by a much quieter 1 November. 🎃🕯️

🍂 Autumn holidays are coming up in Austria.

From 27 to 31 October, schools across Austria have their autumn break. Together with the public holiday on 26 October and All Saints’ Day on 1 November, it makes the longest break between the summer and Christmas holidays for families with school-age children.

That means there's a good stretch of time to slow down, visit family, take a short trip or make the most of autumn in and around Salzburg. 🍁

🎷 Four days of jazz. Venues all over Salzburg's old town. And it's free.

Jazz&TheCity returns from 15 to 18 October, bringing national and international musicians to venues across the historic city centre.

The festival is less about sitting in one concert hall and more about discovering music as you move through the city. There are improvised sessions, crossover acts and plenty of opportunities to simply stop, listen and see where the music takes you.

No ticket needed – just head into the old town and explore. 🎶

🏔️ Salzburg's tech and business landscape extends well beyond the city.

The Pongau, in the south of Salzburg province, is a region of towns and valleys including the district capital St. Johann as well as Bischofshofen, Altenmarkt, Radstadt and the Gastein Valley. Tourism and winter sports are major parts of the regional economy, but the Pongau is also home to industry, trade, healthcare, services and technology-related businesses.

For international professionals, the region offers a different way of living and working in Salzburg: smaller towns, close-knit communities and the mountains right outside your door. At the same time, the Pongau is well connected to Salzburg city by rail, with regular trains reaching places including Bischofshofen, St. Johann and Schwarzach.

And there is plenty to do beyond skiing. In summer, the region is a starting point for hiking, mountain biking and cycling, while the Salzburger Almenweg runs through the Pongau and connects the region's mountain landscapes.

So if you're looking at Salzburg as a place to work and live, don't stop at the city limits.

🌙 What if you could visit several museums in one night?

On 3 October, the ORF Long Night of Museums returns to Salzburg. From 6 PM to midnight, museums and galleries across the city open their doors for special exhibitions, guided tours, workshops and events.

One ticket gives you access to all participating museums and also includes the shuttle buses, the Mönchsberg lift and the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress.

It’s a good way to discover some of Salzburg’s museums – especially if you haven't got around to visiting them yet.

🇦🇹 Want to practise your German without signing up for a course?

The Stadt:Bibliothek Salzburg offers a free German conversation group every Tuesday and Thursday from 4–5 pm. The sessions take place in the public library and are a relaxed way to practise speaking, expand your vocabulary and get more comfortable with everyday German.

No registration is required – just come along and join the conversation. 😊

🎠 The Rupertikirtag opens today!

If you're new to Salzburg, you might know the Rupertikirtag as the five days each September when the squares around the Cathedral fill with fairground rides, music, traditional food and people in Dirndls and Lederhosen. But there's a bit more to it.

The celebration takes place around 24 September, the feast day of St. Rupert, Salzburg's patron saint. According to tradition, Rupert founded St. Peter's Abbey in 696 and laid the foundations for the Salzburg we know today.

The Rupertikirtag itself is a traditional church fair celebrating the anniversary of the Cathedral's consecration. For more than 40 years, it has been part of Salzburg's annual calendar.

And today, it starts again. So if you've never experienced a Kirtag before, why not head into the city and see what it's all about? 😉

🎒 New school, new country, giant cone full of sweets?

If you see children in Austria starting school with a big colourful cone in their arms, don't be surprised. It's called a Schultüte – and it's a first-day-of-school tradition.

The cone is usually filled with sweets, small toys and school supplies, and is given to children on their first day of school. The idea is simple: make the big step into school a little more exciting. 🍭✏️

The tradition is especially common in Austria and Germany and has been around since the 19th century.

So if your child is starting school in Austria this September, a Schultüte might be one of the first local traditions you'll get to discover.
