Learning Beyond the Regular Saturday Sessions 🌿🐘

Our Senior Club members, on Friday, had an incredible educational visit to the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, where learning came alive through hands-on experiences.

The day provided an opportunity for our young people to learn about the conservation of nature—from indigenous trees and their importance to the protection of our wild animals. One of the highlights was the unforgettable experience of interacting with elephants and feeding them under the guidance of the Wildlife Trust team. 🐘🌿

The visit brought to life what our members have been learning during mentorship sessions at Sisonke on environmental awareness, connecting those lessons with real-world experiences in wildlife conservation.

We are sincerely grateful to Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust for opening their doors to our young people and providing such a meaningful learning opportunity. Experiences like this help us broaden the horizons of children in rural communities and connect mentorship with practical, real-world learning.

CAMP MEETING 2026 | THE REAL ID

It has been an enriching time for our club members as we came together for this year’s CAMP MEETING, under the theme “THE REAL ID.”

Throughout the camp, our members engaged in meaningful sessions and conversations around three key topics:

🔹 Identity and Self-Worth – exploring who they are, understanding their uniqueness and recognising their value beyond what others may say or think about them.
🔹 Peer Pressure – learning how to recognise both positive and negative influences, make informed choices and remain true to their values even when faced with pressure from others.
🔹 Healthy Friendships – understanding what makes a friendship healthy, including respect, trust, support, good communication and setting appropriate boundaries.

Beyond the sessions, the camp created opportunities for our club members to connect, build friendships and strengthen relationships with their mentors. Through sports, cooking and eating together, conversations around the bonfire and fun activities such as Campfire Story Building and the Scavenger Hunt, members had the opportunity to learn from one another, work as teams, share experiences and simply enjoy being together.

Another inspiring Saturday at Sisonke!

As is our tradition, we began the day with Devotion and a Math literacy session, nurturing both character and academic growth.

The remainder of the day was dedicated to Creative Expression Contest preparations. Our club members explored different competition categories, showcased their talents, and started creating the work they will submit for this year's contest. From creative ideas to growing confidence, it was exciting to watch each young person express themselves in their own unique way.

We believe that every child has a gift worth discovering and developing. Through opportunities like the Creative Expression Contest, we continue to encourage creativity, build confidence, and empower young people to reach their full potential.

This Saturday, our Seniors Club explored Menstruation and Hygiene Products, with boys and girls meeting in separate sessions to create safe spaces for open learning and discussion.

The boys began by asking, "WHY DO WE NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THIS?" This opened the door to an important conversation about breaking myths surrounding menstruation and womanhood that often contribute to gender inequality. By the end of the session, they understood that menstruation is a natural part of life and that there is no shame in supporting the girls and women around them—even if that means buying or carrying sanitary pads.

The girls' session was highly interactive as they shared their experiences and learned more about the different menstrual hygiene products available to them. Together, they reflected on how they dress, care for themselves and navigate their menstrual cycles, recognising that choosing products they are comfortable with helps them feel confident and supported during that time of the month.

Meanwhile, our Juniors focused on Puberty and Hygiene, learning about the physical changes that come with growing up and the importance of good personal hygiene. During the discussion, many shared that they have parents or guardians at home who help them with their hygiene routines. They were encouraged to gradually become more independent by taking responsibility for simple tasks such as washing their socks and underwear, helping them build confidence, responsibility, and healthy lifelong habits. They were reminded that cleanliness boosts confidence, promotes good health and shows respect for themselves and those around them.

Communication skills are key in building strong relationships, teamwork and confidence.

This Saturday, our Sisonke Club members focused on Effective Communication in separate sessions for our Seniors and Juniors. They explored what communication is, the different ways we communicate and the importance of expressing ourselves clearly while also listening to others with respect.

Through fun and interactive role plays, members demonstrated different forms of communication and reflected on how words, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language all influence the message being shared.

The sessions ended with an important reminder: whether we communicate through words or actions, the way we communicate has a powerful impact on how our message is understood. Effective communication helps us build positive relationships, resolve conflicts and work better with others.

As part of our commitment to equipping our club members with practical life skills, Saturday was dedicated to another exciting Skills Day at Sisonke.

Our members split into two groups, with one team joining Dr. Muyambo Nyikaino in the kitchen to learn baking, while the other worked with Dr. Talent Tshuma Muyambo in the garden. The baking team successfully prepared delicious apple loaves and bread rolls—enough to share with the entire Sisonke family. Meanwhile, the gardening team explored different types of herbs, how they are grown, and the many health benefits they offer. The day ended with everyone coming together to enjoy the fresh bread baked by their fellow club members.

One of the most inspiring moments was seeing our boys confidently taking part in the baking session, challenging the outdated belief that "the kitchen is only for women." At Sisonke Trust, our boys continue to embrace gender equality, learning that skills, responsibilities, and opportunities belong to everyone.

While the bread baked in the oven, we officially launched the 2026 Creative Expression Contest, screening outstanding entries from previous years to inspire this year's participants and help them understand the purpose and possibilities of the competition.

We were also privileged to welcome Global Sojourns Giving Circle founder, Priscilla Plummer, together with other visitors who actively participated in the day's activities. A special highlight was hearing from Sherry Sibanda, a former Sisonke mentee and junior mentor who is now pursuing a Diploma in Teaching. She shared her inspiring journey, reminding our members that with mentorship, dedication, and hard work, their dreams are within reach.

It was truly an eventful and inspiring day. Our members left with new practical skills, fresh ideas for the Creative Expression Contest, and for some, a newfound interest in culinary arts.

As we approach the mid-year examination season, we saw it fit to dedicate Saturday's session to Study Skills, with our Junior and Senior Clubs meeting separately in their respective age groups.

Among the Juniors, when asked, "What makes studying hard?" the room quickly filled with answers like "TV!" and "TikTok!". Their responses naturally took us back to our previous session on Time Management, reminding us that managing distractions is just as important as managing time.

By the end of the session, with guidance from their mentors, each club member was able to create a personal study timetable that fits into their daily routine. It was an important reminder that success in school comes not only from what is learned in the classroom, but also from the discipline, consistency and effort invested at home.

We wish all our club members the very best in their upcoming examinations. Keep believing in yourselves, stay focused and remember that every small step you take today brings you closer to your goals.

Society often has a way of defining what it means to "be a man," but our club members on Saturday had the opportunity to challenge those ideas in safe, age-appropriate spaces.

Our Senior Boys unpacked myths about masculinity, while the Senior Girls explored how these beliefs can impact women and girls. Our Junior Boys and Girls also met separately to discuss common beliefs about boys, encouraging honest conversations and challenging harmful stereotypes.

Everyone had the opportunity to share, listen, reflect and leave with a deeper understanding that respect, empathy and authenticity matter more than outdated expectations.

Reading is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to build confidence, communication and critical thinking. As part of our commitment to providing educational support beyond the classroom, both our Junior and Senior clubs on Saturday dedicated their session to reading.

Using age-appropriate stories, our Juniors brought their story to life through role play, while our Seniors explored stories that encouraged discussion and reflection. Each activity was designed to strengthen English literacy while sharing valuable life lessons in an engaging and enjoyable way.

It was a session filled with learning, creativity and laughter, reminding us that every story has the power to teach, inspire and shape young minds.

Today, we celebrate the visionary behind Sisonke Trust Muyambo Nyikaino , alongside Uncle Siphambili Prosper Jnr and all fathers and father figures whose love, wisdom and sacrifices shape lives and inspire brighter futures.

To the fathers of our club members, our mentors and every man who has embraced the role of a caring parent, thank you for leading with courage, patience and compassion. Your influence extends far beyond your own families, leaving a lasting impact on our community.
