Lets throw it back to our 2025 Combined Forum on "Artificial Intelligence in Macroeconomics". which brought together Central Bank Governors, Ministers of Finance and Planning, and Permanent Secretaries from across Eastern and Southern Africa in October 2025 in Washington D.C.

The forum explored how AI can be leveraged in macroeconomic management, with discussions spanning fiscal management opportunities and challenges, AI's impact on the economy, and private sector applications. Expert insights from the IMF, Bank for International Settlements, and BlackRock highlighted that successful AI adoption requires strong governance frameworks, quality data, subject matter expertise, and alignment with institutional mandates- not technology alone.

Throwback to our intensive Ethics, Governance & Risk Management BDU Workshop (2-6 March 2026) in Durban, South Africa.

Over five days, we brought together finance professionals and decision-makers from across Eastern and Southern Africa to explore the critical intersection of ethics, governance, and enterprise risk management.

Highlights:
• 15 in-depth sessions covering ethical frameworks, governance structures, ERM fundamentals, and emerging risks (AI, ESG, compliance)
• Expert facilitation by Kefa Nyakundi and Hamish Chipungu- both seasoned consultants with deep regional expertise
• Interactive case studies, risk assessments, and business simulations that moved learning into practice
• Participants left equipped to build ethical cultures, strengthen governance, and integrate risk management into strategic planning

From identifying ethical dilemmas to designing risk mitigation strategies, participants engaged with real-world challenges facing institutions across the region. The workshop reinforced a core truth: ethics, governance, and risk management are not separate functions, they're interconnected pillars of organizational resilience.

Mr Jacob Mkandawire, MEFMI's Director of MEFMI's Sovereign Debt Management Programme, is currently attending the Commonwealth Heads of Public Debt Management Forum taking place in London, 23–27 March 2026.

This forum brings together senior debt management officials from Commonwealth nations to strengthen how governments borrow, manage, and repay public debt. Beyond technical expertise sharing, discussions will tackle emerging issues- climate finance, disaster risk, and new technologies and explore how the Commonwealth Meridian debt management system can support institutional capacity across member states.

The week will also see the launch of three critical deliverables: a new report on Public Debt and Youth Development examining how debt decisions shape opportunities for young people; the Commonwealth Public Debt Management Awards recognising excellence in managing public finances; and a practical guide on Debt Swaps to help countries restructure debt for development and climate priorities.

Mr. Mkandawire's participation reflects MEFMI's leadership in advancing sovereign debt management expertise across Eastern and Southern Africa, and our commitment to regional solutions for shared challenges.
