A Cactus From , Growing Wild at Our Border
Did you know the "jumping cholla" (Opuntia fulgida), native to the deserts of Arizona and Mexico, has established itself as an invasive species right here in the Limpopo Valley, with documented infestations in the Beitbridge area?

Because it produces almost no seeds locally, this cactus spreads through detached stem segments that root wherever they fall, forming dense thickets that reduce grazing land and crowd out indigenous plants.

Since 2008, conservationists have used cochineal insects — a natural biological control — to help manage its spread across the Zimbabwe–South Africa border.

At Ukuna Environmental Association, understanding threats like invasive species is part of protecting the ecosystems our community depends on. This is the first in our Facts series, highlighting the environmental realities of the place we call home.

Ukuna Environmental Association is honored to be attending the ongoing National Youth Indaba at the New Ambassador Hotel in Harare. The gathering has brought together the Zimbabwe Youth Council, 40 youth led CSOs, Development Partners and duty bearers from all 10 provincies to reflect on how to strengthen youth participation in governance.

We acknowledge that this youth indaba is a remarkable stepping stone towards ensuring that young people occupy their rightful place in national development

As Ukuna Environmental Association we are devoted to continue empowering the youth, engaging with our communities, self governance, amplifying climate resilience and a clean Zimbabwe.

July 28th, marks World Nature Conservation Day — a global reminder that a healthy environment is the foundation of a healthy society.

At Ukuna Environmental Association , this is the work we show up for every day: turning plastic waste into eco-bricks, advancing our Plastic-to-Fuel initiative, and building the next generation of environmental stewards right here in Beitbridge. Just weeks ago, we trained 50 youth in eco-brick production and climate action — proof that conservation starts with community.

Every bottle recycled, every brick made, every young person trained is a step toward a more resilient Beitbridge and a healthier planet.

♻️ Trash to Treasure Tuesdays

This week: discarded plastic bottles becoming eco-bricks — solid, reusable building blocks made by tightly packing bottles with non-biodegradable waste.

Once filled, an eco-brick can support benches, garden beds, and small structures, giving materials that would otherwise pollute Beitbridge's streets and rivers a second life.

It's a simple process anyone can learn, and a practical way to see "trash" become a resource.

Want to get involved or donate bottles? Reach out to UKUNA.

Yesterday, under the Youth Collective Action for Social Transformation (YCA4SoTra) Project, UKUNA successfully conducted a hands-on EcoBricks Training for young people in Beitbridge after receiving support through the Women's Institute for Leadership Development (WILD), with funding from the European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe.

The practical training equipped participants with the knowledge and skills to make EcoBricks using plastic waste, demonstrating how this climate-smart innovation helps reduce pollution, promotes recycling, and creates sustainable opportunities for communities. Through initiatives like these, young people are empowered to drive environmental stewardship while contributing to a greener and more resilient future.

Today, UKUNA brought together 50 youth in Beitbridge for a morning of learning and hands-on climate action. Participants explored what climate change means for their community, why youth empowerment matters, and how to safely produce ecobricks from plastic waste — before rolling up their sleeves for a practical production session.

Thank you to our facilitators, partners, and every young person who showed up ready to learn and act.
