DIVINE JOURNEY

PART 7

FROM ROCK TO SAND — THE MYSTERY OF DIVINE FORMATION

MAIN SCRIPTURES

Romans 5:3–5
James 1:2–4
2 Corinthians 3:18

Think about a rock in the desert.

It may begin hard, rough, and resistant.

But through weathering, erosion, transportation, and abrasion, that rock can gradually be broken down.

Spiritually, God also deals with the rough edges in our lives.

These may include:

* Pride
* Anger
* Self-will
* Jealousy
* Suspicion
* Insecurity
* Impatience
* Competitiveness
* Possessiveness
* Love of recognition

God uses different instruments in this process.

He uses His Word.

He uses circumstances.

He uses correction.

He uses relationships.

He uses the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

He uses the Cross.

These things can confront the areas where self still wants to rule.

The purpose is not destruction.

The purpose is transformation.

Where we yield to God, transformation takes place.

Second Corinthians 3:18 reminds us that we are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory.

The process may be uncomfortable, but God is forming something beautiful.

PART 7 DECLARATION

I SUBMIT MYSELF TO THE PROCESS OF DIVINE FORMATION.

I WILL NOT RESIST THE WORD, THE CORRECTION, THE CONVICTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, OR THE NECESSARY DEALINGS GOD USES TO FORM CHRIST IN ME.

EVERY ROUGH EDGE THAT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE CHRIST WILL BE BROUGHT UNDER HIS GOVERNMENT.

I WILL NOT FIGHT THE PROCESS; I WILL YIELD TO THE HAND OF GOD.

I AM BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST, FROM GLORY TO GLORY.

"...and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” - Matthew 1:21 NKJV

The first thing Jesus does when He comes into any man's life is to *set him free from sin*. There is no truth in singing and shouting saying "I have seen Jesus" but you have not been set free from sins. _The question is which Jesus have you met?_

Until God has broken the tyranny of sin in your life nothing serious has occurred and taken place.

PART 6

THE JOURNEY DOES NOT ALWAYS CREATE THE PROBLEM — IT EXPOSES IT

MAIN SCRIPTURES

Deuteronomy 8:2
Matthew 15:18–20
James 1:2–4

The journey does not always create the problem.

Sometimes, it simply exposes what was already inside us.

Pressure is revelatory.

When everything is comfortable, certain attitudes may remain hidden.

But pressure can expose:

* Unbelief
* Pride
* Jealousy
* Anger
* Impatience
* A hunger for recognition
* A desire for control

This is why difficult seasons can become opportunities for spiritual growth.

When something disturbs you, ask:

“WHAT IS THIS DISTURBANCE REVEALING ABOUT ME?”

Instead of only asking:

“Who caused this?”

Ask:

“Lord, what are You showing me through this?”

James teaches that the testing of our faith produces patience.

Therefore, trials can become instruments of formation when we allow God to use them.

The goal is not simply to escape every uncomfortable situation.

The goal is to allow God to produce Christ in us through the process.

PART 6 DECLARATION

I WILL NOT ONLY ASK WHO CAUSED THE PROBLEM; I WILL ASK WHAT GOD IS REVEALING IN ME THROUGH IT.

I WILL ALLOW PRESSURE TO EXPOSE WHAT NEEDS TO BE TRANSFORMED.

I WILL NOT RUN FROM EVERY DIFFICULT SEASON.

I WILL ALLOW GOD TO USE EVERY APPROPRIATE SEASON OF TESTING TO PRODUCE PATIENCE, MATURITY, AND CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER IN ME.

WHAT IS EXPOSED IN ME WILL BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GOD TO TRANSFORM ME.

DIVINE JOURNEY - PART 5

THE WILDERNESS — GOD’S CLASSROOM FOR THE REDEEMED

MAIN SCRIPTURES

Deuteronomy 8:2–3
Exodus 16:1–4

The wilderness was not a mistake.

It was a classroom.

God said:

“And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart…”

The wilderness revealed what was inside them.

Hunger revealed dependence.

Thirst revealed dependence.

Waiting revealed impatience.

Manna revealed whether they would trust God daily.

Uncertainty revealed their desire for control.

The wilderness was therefore not merely a geographical location.

It was a place of formation.

God was teaching them how to live by faith.

Sometimes we know doctrine but have not yet learned dependence.

We can know that God provides and still panic when provision is delayed.

We can know that God is faithful and still become anxious when we cannot see the next step.

The wilderness turns what we know intellectually into what we experience practically.

God uses seasons of waiting, limitation, uncertainty, and dependence to teach us that HE HIMSELF IS ENOUGH.

PART 5 DECLARATION

I WILL NOT DESPISE THE WILDERNESS SEASON.

I WILL ALLOW GOD TO TEACH ME, HUMBLE ME, AND REVEAL WHAT IS IN MY HEART.

I WILL LEARN DEPENDENCE, TRUST, PATIENCE, AND OBEDIENCE.

I WILL NOT ONLY KNOW GOD BY DOCTRINE; I WILL KNOW HIM BY EXPERIENCE.

IN EVERY SEASON, I WILL LEARN THAT GOD HIMSELF IS ENOUGH.

DIVINE JOURNEY PART 3

SALVATION IS THE GATE; DISCIPLESHIP IS THE JOURNEY

MAIN SCRIPTURES

Luke 9:23
John 8:31–32
Matthew 28:19–20

Salvation is the gate, but discipleship is the journey.

Jesus said:

“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.”

Notice the word CONTINUE.

Discipleship is not merely beginning well.

It is continuing.

Continuing when you are excited.

Continuing when you are dry.

Continuing when you are corrected.

Continuing when you are misunderstood.

Continuing when obedience becomes expensive.

Continuing when your ambition is touched.

Continuing when you are disappointed.

Continuing when an unpleasant part of yourself is exposed.

Discipleship is sustained obedience.

It is allowing Christ to teach you, correct you, shape you, and govern your life.

Many people want salvation, but discipleship requires surrender.

Salvation brings us into the family.

Discipleship teaches us how to live as members of that family.

Salvation begins the journey.

Discipleship keeps us moving.

PART 3 DECLARATION

I WILL NOT ONLY BEGIN WITH CHRIST; I WILL CONTINUE WITH CHRIST.

I WILL FOLLOW HIM WHEN THE JOURNEY IS EASY AND WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT.

I WILL NOT ABANDON THE PROCESS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN CORRECTED, DISAPPOINTED, OR CHALLENGED.

I CHOOSE TO CONTINUE IN HIS WORD.

I AM NOT ONLY SAVED; I AM A DISCIPLE BEING FORMED INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST.

PART 2

SAVED FROM SOMETHING, SAVED UNTO SOMEONE

MAIN SCRIPTURES

Exodus 19:4
Colossians 1:13
Romans 8:29
Philippians 3:7–10

Salvation is greater than escape.

We were saved FROM sin, condemnation, darkness, and Satan’s dominion.

But we were also saved UNTO SOMEONE.

God told Israel:

“I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.”
— Exodus 19:4

Notice the language: “I brought you UNTO MYSELF.”

God did not deliver Israel merely so they could enjoy freedom. He delivered them so they could belong to Him.

This is why He said:

“Let My people go, that they may serve me.”

Salvation is not simply freedom FROM something. It is freedom FOR Someone.

Colossians 1:13 says that God:

“Hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”

We have been transferred from one kingdom into another.

Therefore, we are not our own.

Our bodies belong to Christ.

Our future belongs to Christ.

Our ambitions belong to Christ.

Our possessions belong to Christ.

Our ministry belongs to Christ.

Our relationships belong to Christ.

Our lives belong to Christ.

The supreme treasure of salvation is not merely what God gives us.

The supreme treasure is CHRIST HIMSELF.

Paul said in Philippians 3:10:

“That I may know him…”

The journey is therefore not merely about reaching a destination.

It is about knowing the One who called us.

PART 2 DECLARATION

I WAS NOT MERELY BROUGHT OUT OF EGYPT. I WAS BROUGHT UNTO GOD.

I AM NOT SAVED MERELY TO ESCAPE HELL; I AM SAVED TO KNOW CHRIST, FOLLOW CHRIST, AND BELONG COMPLETELY TO CHRIST.

MY LIFE BELONGS TO HIM. MY FUTURE BELONGS TO HIM. MY AMBITIONS BELONG TO HIM.

CHRIST IS MY SUPREME TREASURE.

I WILL NOT STOP AT WHAT GOD HAS SAVED ME FROM; I WILL PURSUE THE ONE WHO SAVED ME.

DIVINE JOURNEY PART 1

THE STARTING POINT — SALVATION: THE JOURNEY BEGINS AT THE CROSS

MAIN SCRIPTURES: Exodus 12:1–14; John 3:3–7; Colossians 1:12–14; 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Every journey has a starting point.

No matter how glorious the destination may be, nobody arrives without first entering the road.

So it is with the Divine Journey.

Before discipleship.

Before spiritual formation.

Before ministry.

Before leadership.

Before usefulness.

Before God begins dealing deeply with our rough edges—

there must first be:

SALVATION.

A spiritually dead man cannot be discipled into life.

He needs life first.

Jesus told Nicodemus:

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3

Nicodemus was religious.

He knew Scripture.

He was a teacher in Israel.

Yet Jesus did not tell him:

“Improve yourself.”

He said:

“YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN.”

God’s answer to fallen Adam is not merely religious education.

It is new life in Christ.

This is why Israel’s journey did not begin with the wilderness.

It began with:

A LAMB.

Before manna— the Lamb.

Before Sinai— the Lamb.

Before the tabernacle— the Lamb.

Before Jordan— the Lamb.

Before Canaan— the Lamb.

Blood had to be shed before the journey could begin.

Likewise:

“Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.”
— 1 Corinthians 5:7

We do not begin the Christian journey through our performance.

We begin because Christ has finished the work necessary for our redemption.

Salvation gives life.

Then discipleship begins the long work of formation.

A newborn baby possesses genuine human life but still needs growth.

Likewise, the new believer possesses spiritual life but must grow.

Therefore never confuse:

LIFE with: MATURITY.

The newly saved believer may still have rough edges.

Do not approve the roughness.

But do not despise the traveller.

God has begun a journey.

PART 1 DECLARATION

I began because the Lamb died.

The blood opened the way.

Grace brought me out.

Christ gave me life.

The starting point is salvation.

The road is discipleship.

And the destination is increasing conformity to Christ.
