🐾👧 A FRIENDLY SECUNDA PARKRUN SAFETY REMINDER 👧🐾
At Secunda parkrun, we love seeing our community members enjoying parkrun together — including families and those who participate with their four-legged friends. ❤️
However, everyone’s safety is our priority, and we would like to remind all parkrunners of a few important parkrun policies.
🐕 DOGS AT PARKRUN
Where dogs are permitted, parkrun’s policy requires:
🐾 One dog per parkrunner
🐾 A short, handheld, non-extendable lead must be used
🐾 The dog must remain at the participant’s side, within arms’ reach and under control at all times
🐾 Retractable/extendable leads and waist harnesses are not permitted, subject to the specific assistance-dog provisions
🐾 Prong collars are not permitted
🐾 A participant may not participate with a dog and a pushchair at the same time
🐾 Please clean up after your dog
🐾 Please consider your dog’s behaviour, temperament, the weather and the course conditions before participating
Most importantly:
PLEASE KNOW YOUR DOG AND BE HONEST ABOUT WHETHER YOU CAN CONTROL IT.
If your dog becomes anxious, reactive, aggressive, lunges at people or other dogs, or cannot be safely controlled around other participants, please do not put your dog, yourself or another parkrunner at risk.
A parkrun event is a busy environment with runners, walkers, children, buggies, volunteers and other dogs. What may be manageable in a normal walk may not necessarily be manageable in a busy parkrun environment.
Please give other participants and dogs adequate space and never assume that another person’s child or dog is comfortable around your dog.
👧 CHILDREN UNDER 11
A very important reminder to parents and guardians:
At 5k parkrun events, children under the age of 11 must remain within arm’s reach of their parent, guardian or designated adult at all times.
This applies before the event, during the event and after the event until you leave the parkrun environment.
Please do not allow children under 11 to:
❌ Run ahead of their supervising adult
❌ Wander around the start/finish area unsupervised
❌ Approach or touch unfamiliar dogs
❌ Run up to dogs, particularly while they are on a lead
❌ Move away from their supervising adult after finishing
Children may not always recognise when a dog is uncomfortable, frightened or becoming reactive. Please don’t rely on a dog owner or volunteer to supervise your child.
Parents/guardians remain responsible for keeping their children within arm’s reach.
🐕 + 👧 PLEASE HELP US KEEP EVERYONE SAFE
We ask all parents, guardians, dog owners and parkrunners to be considerate of one another.
If you see a dog that appears uncontrolled or a child getting too close to a dog, please create some space and notify a volunteer or the Run Director if there is a safety concern.
Our volunteers are there to facilitate a safe and enjoyable event for everyone — they are not there to provide childcare or to manage someone’s dog.
❤️ A LITTLE CONSIDERATION GOES A LONG WAY
These policies are not intended to exclude anyone.
They are there to help ensure that children, adults, dogs and volunteers can all enjoy parkrun safely.
Please listen to the pre-event briefing, follow the parkrun policies and, most importantly, look out for one another.
