Why should prickly pears and other non-indigenous species be removed from natural areas?
Prickly pears (Opuntia species) can spread rapidly in natural environments, forming dense, impenetrable thickets that outcompete indigenous vegetation, reduce biodiversity and limit the movement of wildlife. Their fleshy fruits are readily eaten by birds and mammals, allowing seeds to be dispersed over long distances and creating new infestations. The sharp spines and tiny barbed glochids also pose a hazard to people, pets and livestock. While some ornamental varieties are popular in gardens, they should be carefully managed to prevent them from escaping into surrounding natural areas. Garden plants should never be dumped as garden waste in open spaces and any unwanted plants should be disposed of responsibly to help protect South Africaโ€™s unique biodiversity.

Should you wish to plant a cacti or succulents in your garden, why not choose one of our own species?
