DURBAN REGION REPORT ON THE PINETOWN DISTRICT BILATERALS

Pinetown District Bilateral meeting held between the Department of Education (Pinetown District) and Organised Labour (NATU).

Date: 08 September 2026
Venue: Pinetown boys
Chairpersons: Mr. Mkhize (NATU Durban Region Chairperson) and Mrs. Nkosi-Tembe (Pinetown District Director) - Co-Chairing

Attendance: a) Department of Education: District Director - Mrs Nkosi-Tembe, Chief Education Specialists (CESs), Deputy Chief Education Specialists (DCESs) b) NATU: Durban Regional Leadership, Different Branches BEC Members.

The purpose of the Bilateral was to engage on various education-related challenges affecting schools and to develop joint mechanisms aimed at improving the life of a child at school and enhancing effective teaching and learning.

The meeting deliberated robustly on, inter alia: staff establishment ,filling of vacant posts, the holistic well-being of NATU members at schools and strengthening of partnership between the District and Labour (NATU) for quality public education.

It was resolved that all outstanding matters requiring further consultation and data collection be tabled for finalization at the next sitting. To allow for thorough preparation and reporting, the meeting was adjourned. The meeting was adjourned and will reconvene at the end of September 2026.

The Inanda Branch appreciates the platform created by the Pinetown District to engage on matters affecting education. As NATU, we remain committed to the principle of our union and to protect the rights of educators while advancing quality learning for every child.
