Happy Youth Day.

Today we salute the passion and drive of South Africa's youth. We believe that accelerating youth economic opportunities goes hand-in-hand with environmental conservation. For 15 years, WWF's Environmental Leaders Programme has successfully bridged the gap between academic study and the working world.

Funded by the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, the programme places recent Honours and Master’s graduates into paid, 12-month internships across traditional conservation and emerging sectors like green engineering and environmental law. Let's keep growing the next generation of environmental leaders together.

Read more about the programme's footprint here: https://www.greentrust.org.za/2021/11/22/wwf-nedbank-green-trust-leaders-report/

The Environmental Leaders Graduate Internship Programme recruits committed young leaders and supports their career development for key and critical positions.

What if one of South Africa's biggest environmental challenges could become a building solution? 🌱

A new community centre in Elandskloof, Western Cape, is showing how. Built using material derived from invasive alien plants, this first-of-its-kind project turns an environmental threat into an opportunity for people and nature.

By transforming cleared invasive biomass into a construction material, the initiative supports ecosystem restoration, creates local opportunities, and strengthens community infrastructure.

A powerful example of a circular, nature-based solution in action.

This World Environment Day, we’re reminded that healthy ecosystems and thriving communities go hand in hand. But right now, South Africa’s communal farmers are facing a growing crisis. Foot-and-mouth disease is not only impacting livestock, it’s disrupting livelihoods, threatening food security and placing immense pressure on rural communities.

Protecting people and the environment means supporting sustainable systems that strengthen both land and livelihoods. Behind every statistic are real families waiting for relief.

If we are just passing through, our responsibility is to tread lightly and leave this home better than we found it.

This World Environment Day, we reflect on our commitment to creating a future where people and nature can thrive together. Through our work, we continue to support and protect the landscapes, communities and ecosystems that sustain us all.

This World Bicycle Day, we celebrate one of the simplest ways to create a healthier planet and healthier communities.

Riding a bicycle helps reduce air pollution, lowers carbon emissions, eases traffic congestion, and promotes cleaner, greener cities. It’s also a powerful way to improve physical health, mental wellbeing, and save on fuel and transport costs.

One bicycle ride may seem small, but collectively, these everyday choices can create lasting environmental impact.

Because a more sustainable future starts with how we choose to move.

Happy Global Day of Parents 💚

Today we celebrate the incredible parents who shape, guide, protect and nurture life in all its forms.

Across families and across nature, parenting comes in many styles.

From the Protective Parent always watching over their young, to the Snack Hunter making sure no one goes hungry, to the Wise One offering guidance when it’s needed most… these roles exist everywhere in the natural world too.

Because whether in human families or in the wild, parents are the ones who make life happen.

Tell us in the comments: What type of parent raised you?
