Today, as the world celebrates World Environment Day 2026, Pondoland Pride joins millions of people across the globe in answering the urgent call: .

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the campaign reminds us that climate change is no longer a distant threat, it is happening now.

Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, stronger storms, droughts, and the loss of biodiversity are all warning signs that demand immediate action. As South Africans, we also observe June as National Environment Month, a time to reflect on our relationship with nature and strengthen our commitment to protecting the environment for future generations.

At Pondoland Pride, we believe that climate action begins in our communities. Through environmental education, citizen science, water stewardship, waste reduction, ecosystem restoration, and youth empowerment, we are helping to build a more climate-resilient and sustainable future for Pondoland and beyond.

Every tree planted matters.
Every water source (spring/river/ wetland) protected matters.
Every young person educated matters.
Every action for the planet matters.

The transition to a greener future cannot wait. Together, let us embrace renewable energy, protect our natural resources, reduce pollution, and become active stewards of the environment. The climate challenge is now. The solutions are now. The time to act is .
Happy World Environment Day!

Yesterday, Pondoland Pride had the privilege of attending the first annual Climate Change iNdaba hosted by the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality at Wild Coast Sun.

The iNdaba forms part of the municipality's commitment to implementing its Climate Change Strategy, raising environmental awareness, and encouraging communities to actively participate in addressing climate change challenges.

We applaud this important initiative and look forward to continued collective work in building climate-resilient communities and promoting environmental stewardship across Pondoland.

Zigy Zee Tshutsha thanks for representing Pondoland Pride.

๐ŸŒ Aquatic Biomes: The Water Worlds of Earth ๐ŸŒŠ

Did you know that aquatic biomes cover about 75% of our planet?

๐Ÿ’ง Freshwater Ecosystems include rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands. They contain very little salt and provide water for drinking, agriculture, and countless living organisms.

๐ŸŒŠ Marine Ecosystems include oceans, seas, coral reefs, and estuaries. These salty water bodies are home to an amazing diversity of plants and animals and play a vital role in regulating Earth's climate.

Both freshwater and marine ecosystems are essential for maintaining biodiversity and supporting life on our planet.

๐Ÿ“š Geography Fact: Oceans hold about 97% of Earth's water, while only about 3% is freshwater!

๐ŸŒ Concept of Biome

A biome is a large natural region characterized by a particular climate, vegetation, and animal life. It represents a community of plants and animals that have adapted to similar environmental conditions.
Examples of major biomes include: ๐ŸŒฒ Forests ๐ŸŒพ Grasslands ๐Ÿœ๏ธ Deserts โ„๏ธ Tundra
Biomes help us understand how climate influences ecosystems and biodiversity across the Earth.
๐Ÿ“š Geography Fact: The same biome can be found in different parts of the world if they share similar climatic conditions.

June is celebrated as Environment Month under the theme:

The theme focuses on reducing food waste and protecting the environment. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), around 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year.

โ€ข Think before throwing food away.
โ€ข Eat responsibly by choosing locally produced and environmentally friendly foods.
โ€ข Save by reducing waste and using resources wisely.

When food is wasted, all the water, energy, and resources used to produce it are also wasted. The campaign therefore encourages communities to make better choices and become more environmentally conscious.

As we begin Youth Month, we honour the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of the young people of 1976 whose actions helped shape the South Africa we know today.

Youth Month reminds us that young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow, they are the innovators, problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, and change-makers of today. Investing in youth means investing in stronger communities, sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and a brighter future for all.

At Pondoland Pride, this Youth Month, we call on individuals, organisations, businesses, and community leaders to:
โ€ข Mentor a young person
โ€ข Share knowledge and skills
โ€ข Support youth-led initiatives
โ€ข Create opportunities for learning and growth
โ€ข Encourage young people to dream boldly and lead confidently

Together, let us empower, equip, and elevate our youth. The future of South Africa is in the hands of its youth. Let us invest in them today for a better tomorrow.
