Pondoland Pride

Today, the Pondoland Pride team of water citizen scientists has arrived in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) to attend a workshop hosted by Watercan . We are excited and looking forward to this valuable learning opportunity as we continue strengthening our knowledge and skills in water quality monitoring.

As we navigate the challenges posed by the current El Niño conditions, our work as citizen scientists becomes even more important. Understanding changes in water quality, strengthening community awareness, and contributing to the protection of our precious water resources are essential to building resilient communities.

We look forward to gaining new insights, exchanging knowledge, and exploring ways to make our citizen science work even more impactful in the communities we serve.
At Pondoland Pride, we believe that every water sample tells a story, every observation matters, and every informed community is better equipped to protect its water resources.

A heartfelt thank you to WaterCan for creating opportunities that empower citizen scientists and strengthen community-led water stewardship.

Today, Pondoland Pride joined the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality in their weekly Friday clean-up campaign, an initiative dedicated to keeping our communities clean and protecting our environment. The municipality's ongoing efforts reflect the importance of collective responsibility in creating cleaner, healthier communities. We were pleased to contribute to this initiative because, at Pondoland Pride, we believe that environmental stewardship begins right where we live.

We understand that waste does not always remain where it is discarded. Litter can be carried by rainwater into streams and rivers, eventually reaching our oceans. This threatens aquatic ecosystems, marine life, water quality and the communities that depend on these natural resources.
As we observe October's National Marine Month in South Africa, this is a reminder that protecting our oceans begins far beyond the coastline. Every piece of litter responsibly disposed of, every waterway protected and every community that takes action contributes to a healthier marine environment. This action also echoes the spirit of CNN's Call to Earth initiative, which inspires individuals and communities around the world to take practical action to protect our planet. With the 2026 theme "Think Blue" highlighting the connection between our oceans, rivers and communities, today's clean-up is a meaningful reminder that local action contributes to global environmental protection.

We extend our appreciation to the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality for its continued efforts to keep our environment clean and for creating opportunities for collective environmental action. CNN International CNN River Cleanup

Today, we celebrate the knowledge, resilience, and leadership of rural women who nurture both people and the planet.

Through feeding communities, sustaining livelihoods, preserving indigenous seeds, safeguarding our natural resources, and restoring degraded land, rural women are cultivating more than food they are growing resilience, protecting biodiversity, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.

Environmental stewardship begins with recognising the wisdom of those who care for the land every day. When we empower rural women, we strengthen communities, restore ecosystems, and build a future where both people and nature thrive.

Happy International Day of Rural Women 2026. Honour their knowledge. Champion their leadership. Protect the land they nurture.

As we continue with water monitoring, Ntlakhwe Senior Secondary school water guardians tested their school Jojo tank which they use as their drinking water supply.

The water monitoring initiative is a reminder of the importance of healthy water systems for our communities, its people and our environment.

As part of our ongoing environmental monitoring work, Pondoland Pride conducted water quality testing using a WaterCan testing kit. This allows us to monitor key indicators of water quality and better understand the condition of our local water resources.

Water monitoring helps us identify changes in our waterways, raise awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources, and encourage responsible environmental stewardship.
