Dassenberg Horse and Dog Rescue Centre

Dassenberg Horse and Dog Rescue Centre At Dassenberg Rescue Centre, we express our love in simple actions, rather than big words. When an animal first steps onto our farm, they move into a new life.

We rescue, rehabilitate and re-house neglected horses and dogs, and help them transition from neglected to loved, from sad to happy, from desperate to hopeful. We rescue, rehabilitate and re-house neglected horses and dogs, and help them transition from neglected to loved, from sad to happy, from desperate to hopeful – and even beautiful. We fight against animal abuse, specializing in before and after stories – stories that revolve around the efforts of incredible people, animal people.

Did you know that at any given moment, we have between 40 and 50 dogs up for adoption? Because space is limited, we can only bring a few select pups to our weekly adoption days at De Werf Farmstall.

Our full pack ranges from tiny puppies just a few weeks old to wise, gentle seniors up to 12 years old, and everything in between! If you don't find your perfect match at the market, you can easily make an appointment to visit the farm and meet all 40 to 50 of our amazing dogs.

Who needs TV when you have puppies? 📺😂 🐶🐶

Annaline has her hands full with the shadow brigade of pups. Every gate opening is a major expedition, and every new object is a mystery to be solved. They keep us laughing all day long!

But let's be fair, they are not the only ones who makes us smile. . . Thanks for entertaining us, Annaline! 😂

This 4-year-old boy is not just a survivor—he’s an absolute character with a massive heart for both humans and other dogs!

Buddy’s journey to us wasn't easy. He first showed up on a local farm where he wasn't welcome due to fears he might chase the sheep. A few weeks later, a kind Samaritan found him wandering down Brakkenfontein Road and brought him into our care.

When Buddy arrived, he carried the painful physical reminders of a tough life on the streets, with scars on his legs and bite marks all over his body.

Initially, Buddy was understandably quiet and kept to himself in his own kennel. But oh, how times have changed!

Buddy has completely shed his quiet shell! He is now wonderfully vocal and loves to let us know exactly when he expects his belly rubs and attention.

He also decided that his own kennel was a bit too lonely. Showing some serious determination, he actually dug a hole under the fence completely on his own accord just to go visit his neighbours, Rajah and Cinnamon! He absolutely adores other dogs and lives for his time playing in the park and is always ready for his next big outdoor adventure.

Despite the rough start and the scars he carries, Buddy holds zero grudges. He is extremely loving and actively seeks out attention from every single person he meets.

Buddy is a clever, resilient, and deeply affectionate boy who is ready to bring his joyful energy to a forever home—preferably one with some doggy siblings he doesn't have to dig under a fence to see!

📍 Location: Between Atlantis and Philadelphia

🐴 Did you know that a horse can hear your heartbeat from several feet away?

In our workshops at Dassenberg, we often talk about horses being "mirrors." Because they are prey animals, they are hyper-aware of their environment and the energy around them. They don't care about your job title, your past, or what you're wearing—they respond strictly to how you feel right now.

When workshop participants step into the paddock, our horses teach them the ultimate lesson in authenticity. If you are anxious but pretending to be calm, the horses know. They invite us to take a breath, drop our armor, and just be.

📸 Featured here: True peace is found when all walls come down and pure trust takes over. This soft, quiet moment captures the bond and emotional safety our rescue horses share with those who embrace the power of letting go of stress, anxiety and fear. ✨

5-Star Reviews from the Staff… 1-Star from the Puppies! 🌟🐶

Our puppies weren't too sure about the strange new look, but our staff were absolutely thrilled to model their high-tech winter wear! While the pups gave the oversized raincoats some serious side-eye, the human team couldn't be happier to finally be "Cape-of-Storms-proof.

The recent "Cape of Storms" may be behind us, but we all know that the true Western Cape winter months are still on the way. Thanks to some incredible community heroes, our team won't have to face the next downpour soaked to the bone!

We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club of Bellville. Because of their incredible generosity, every single member of our staff has been sponsored with brand-new, heavy-duty raincoats, trousers, and gumboots. Knowing our staff will be warm, dry, and protected while caring for our rescues dogs and horses brings us so much peace of mind. 🧥👢

We also want to say a huge thank you to the fantastic team at Jonsson Workwear (Kraaifontein)! Not only did they give us expert assistance to ensure we picked the absolute best, most durable gear for rugged farm work, but they also supported us with a wonderful Non-Profit discount.

It takes a village to run a rescue, and we are so incredibly proud of ours. When the next wind and rain show their faces, the Dassenberg team will be ready! 💪🐕🐴

Why do our volunteers and workshop participants spend time carefully combing out tails?

Beyond the physical benefits—keeping the hair healthy, preventing skin irritation, and removing debris—grooming is a profound therapeutic tool.

It mimics the natural "mutual grooming" horses do in the wild to show affection and establish safety.

While combing out a tail, our workshop attendees learn patience, presence, and how to build a partnership based on mutual respect. It’s where human hands and horse hearts truly connect.
