Sandalwood is a high value crop that is earning a great income to the islands that Sandalwood is growing naturally. Vanuatu has an indigenous Sandalwood species scientifically named Santalum austrocalenodicum. The Vanuatu indigenous Sandalwood is the same species as that of New Caledonia. Department of forests had been researching in Sandalwood in Vanuatu since 1995 to assess the relationship between growth and girth or circumference size and volume of Sandalwood. Department of forests went further in the research to assess the quality of oil of the indigenous Sandalwood species. With the support of the Australian Center of International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) the Department of forests was able to study the quality of oil in the species. Through the James Cook University in Carnes, Australia and Department of forests the ACIAR Sandalwood Oil Study of Vanuatu was conducted and revealed that some families of the Vanuatu Sandalwood appears to be Second to the World Standard of the Oil.
