Happy Juneteenth from The Youngstown (OH) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated!

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of African Americans. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free.

As we honor this important day in our nation’s history, we also reflect on the ongoing pursuit of justice, equity, and opportunity for all. Juneteenth reminds us to celebrate the progress made, acknowledge the sacrifices of those who came before us, and remain committed to building stronger, more inclusive communities.

May we continue to uplift one another, preserve our history, and inspire future generations through service, education, and advocacy.

Freedom. Hope. Progress.

Tuesday’s Tips: Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month 🧠

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month—a time to learn more about brain health and the factors that may increase the risk of dementia.

While aging is the greatest risk factor, family history, stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, repeated brain injuries, and certain medications or infections may also play a role.

The good news is that healthy habits can help support brain health throughout life. Research supports six pillars of brain health:
🥗 Eat right
😴 Get restorative sleep
🏃🏽‍♀️Exercise regularly
👥 Stay socially connected
🧘🏾‍♀️Manage stress
🧩 Engage your brain

These simple habits aren’t luxuries reserved for special occasions—they are everyday choices that can support cognitive health and overall well-being.

Remember: Early diagnosis is key. If you notice changes in memory, thinking, or daily functioning, talk with your healthcare provider.

💜 Healthy habits today can help support brain health tomorrow.

Tuesday’s Tips: June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month 🧠💜

Many people use the terms Alzheimer’s disease and dementia interchangeably, but they are not the same.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that affect memory, thinking, and daily functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60–80% of dementia cases.

It’s also important to know that dementia is different from normal age-related forgetfulness.

Normal aging may be:
✅Misplacing your keys and finding them later
✅Occasionally forgetting a name or appointment

Possible signs of dementia may include:
⚠️ Forgetting what a key is used for
⚠️ Difficulty completing familiar tasks
⚠️ Getting lost in familiar places
⚠️ Loss of skills in addition to memory loss

Dementia is not a normal part of aging. Early recognition and evaluation can help individuals and families access treatment, support, and resources.

💙 Tuesday’s Tips: Men’s Health Month 💙

June is Men’s Health Month—a reminder that prevention, early detection, and healthy habits can make a significant difference in long-term health and well-being.

We encourage the men in our lives to stay current with recommended screenings and preventive care. Many health conditions have few or no symptoms in their early stages. Early intervention and treatment often lead to the best outcomes.

✔️ Schedule regular checkups
✔️ Stay physically active
✔️ Eat a healthy diet
✔️ Prioritize mental health
✔️ Know your numbers
✔️ Don’t ignore changes in your health

Strong men take charge of their health.
