Barely 36 hours after one of the most positive exposures to Islam and Muslims in America, via the funeral of Muhammad Ali, it appears all of that good will be wiped away by a senseless act of violence, perpetrated by a nobody who happens to have a Muslim name.

Such is the problem of being a minority under pressure: the actions of one become linked to all.

Last I checked, Caucasian male mass-shooters (which is the default) do not represent all of white America. Mexican gangsters don't represent all Latinos. African American criminals are not representative of the entire African American population.

So why must I issue an apology for something perpetrated by a mentally unstable person simply because his name is 'Omar'?

I'm not trying to be callous with regards to the deaths in Orlando - any and all loss of human life in such a manner is a tragedy, and no religion or law or moral code would approve such an act.

I merely wish to point out that it seems unfair that the actions of one are extrapolated to represent all ONLY when the perpetrator is Muslim. We never have all churches issue condemnations when a Christian fanatic murders an abortion doctor. So why must we as a community somehow collectively 'own up' the crimes caused by a lone, deranged person? (And as of the writing of this paragraph, by all accounts it appears to be an act perpetrated by an individual acting on his own, who has not associated this act with religion nor acted on behalf of a terrorist group).

If you want a condemnation, I condemn every unjust killing equally, regardless of the religion, race or nationality of the shooter. But I'm afraid I will not be issuing an apology, as I have nothing to apologize for.

PLEASE READ CONCERNING SYRIAN COLLECTION DRIVE AsalaamuAlaykum, I am very sorry to have to be writing this to you all. First off, JazakAllah Khair for all who took interest and tried to help the best they could. I will explain to you the situation so InshaAllah you will understand it. A few weeks ago we got in contact with an Imam from Chicago who told us that he was taking items into Syria and provided much proof and detailed information on his mission on his organization Islamic Oasis on who he was and who he was correlated with. Upon hearing this I went to the mosque Masjid Alkhair to ask for permission to allow this brother to do a khutbah on March 6 to come and collect the items that day and possibly do a presentation downstairs. There was an email sent to the president but the president of the Mosque expressed her concerns about the khutbah being political based. I went in person sometime later and spoke to the president to try and explain details of the situation that there is nothing political about this humanitarian effort that we are doing nor is there any money being asked from the mosque. That day she told me that it was not up to her to decide but it was up to the committee of the mosque to decide and intern I next spoke to one of the committee members who is a lady. She did seem highly disinterested in what I was saying again emphasizing that they did not need politics in the mosque and seemed concerned about monetary donations from the mosque. I insured her that this man was merely coming to give a khutbah as he is an Imam and it would be nice to have other speakers and that he is not politically affiliated nor will he discuss any form of politics and nor will he asked for any monetary donations at the khutbah. I explained that afterwords in the evening he wanted to give a presentation on the work that he does in Syria and at that time explain fundraising for an ambulance but this was after jummah. Again she seemed not too interested I asked her for her email and she told me that she cannot give out personal emails so I asked her for a committee email and then again she said she cannot give out personal emails and I ask her how am I supposed to contact the committee she didn't really give me a reply but told me that there was enough issues going on within their mosque and that they need to focus on their own community here in Youngstown. I said okay and I walked away to the president and asked for her email but also she did not seem willing to give me her email and she told me just to email another person and she will get the email from them. I left having a little bit of hope that if I comprised the email and sent it via the third-party to the president that they would maybe consider one seeing all the detailed information I put into it. I called the imam of our Mosque and asked him about the situation he too denied me on the basis that he has no power in his hands to allow a khutbah or allow any activity that it must go through the committee. A committee of which refuses to give me any form of communication with them and there is no way to even sit down and talk to them because she said she was not going to have another meeting for another couple months because they just had one. I was so nervous so I called the American Arab community center in liberty and ask if I could book for March 6. I was denied that too therefore I called them and asked them if I can come to their board meeting on Saturday to present everything before their committee so at least I could have the center booked so this brother who was coming from Chicago can give his presentation on everything. Meanwhile while I was waiting for Saturday to come to speak to the people of the Arab American community center I was called back by our imam from the Mosque who told me that he had spoken with the president and that they were allowing this brother to give a khutbah on March 6 I was so happy and upon hearing this I sent out the flyers and the advertisements for collections. I had previously spoken to some ladies who already had items to donate it was on this time that I created the Facebook events because I thought that everything would go through now especially that the brother could come and give his khutbah. The very next day I was called by out imam again who had just told me that the brother from Chicago could give his khutbah on March 6 and who had just called the brother from Chicago and told him you can come on March 6 and give your khutbah he called him himself called me and told me that the committee decided no. So the previous day I was given permission to have this brother come give the khutbah by our imam and the president and the very next day after calling the imam and alerting him and sending out the events and everything I was denied it was told no but I was told yes and then told no and so was the brother from Chicago. I find it in even bigger embarrassment at the fact that this imam from Chicago who wanted to come and do something very good from the bottom of his heart was called and told yes and then called the very next day and canceled on. I was honestly very torn and had my hopes on the Arab American community center when I went that Saturday they're only five gentleman present not the whole committee and they already had a stout no on their eyes. Point blank within three minutes of me talking one of the gentleman just straight out told me know that there is no need for extreme politics no need of the Syrian government or conflict being discussed within the Arab American community center that they don't need to be funding organizations that they are not sure of. I could not reiterate enough how none of this effort for the Syrian collection had anything to do with any form of politics or any money asking from the Arab American community center or the mosque itself but I was denied on both efforts. Everybody seem to be concerned about the governmental problems forgetting the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of people who are dying daily not only in Syria but around the world. But instead of taking the step forward and ignoring the governmental issues of which we have no control over but we do have control over the help and the charity that we give to our brothers and sisters and humans around the world. It seemed as if fear is what kept members of our community in fear of stepping forward towards a charity event. And I reiterate to you again and again that there was no form of politics discussed between me and the imam from Chicago there was no forms of politics or government parties or any group or anybody who was involved in the talks or this humanitarian effort this was an effort to collect clothing medical supplies and nonperishable food items to be simply sent over to Syria to be used in a hospital and among the innocent civilians who are truly the one suffering from all of this. This is my dilemma at this point and now I have no place for the Chicago imam to come and speak and he's already going to go to another state however we are in the process of looking for another group who will send outs items like we did before with Palestine overseas to Syria we have another Chicago in them who we may be able to take a bus of the items up to and drop them. Simple clothing simple medicine that's all we were asking for to collect them to give them and that would be the end of that there would be nothing more nobody was being supported except for the hurt and wounded men women and children who have nothing to do with the conflicts going on overseas or around the world. And it's really sad to see that the people who live here in the comforts and luxuries of their warm homes with their nice cars MashaAllah and peaceful lives tend to forget the fact of the suffering around us it is so easy to post on Facebook a status or a photo of the broken child or a wounded mother or a husband who just lost his wife and children is so easy for us to post it but not at all easy for us to take a step forward does it seem as if posting these images or just talking about it makes the situation better or means that you were doing something for the people over there. And I know it is hard for many people in our community because monetary issues and life issues don't give us the ability to give a lot of what we have however with this sort of effort we as Youngstown community had a chance to collect items that would not have ripped apart our backs to give them and hopes that they would've done better overseas individual efforts don't always compare to collective efforts and us as a community collectively sending this shipment could've been a beautiful thing even if somebody donated one sweater or one blanket or went and bought one bottle of children's Tylenol one that's it that would've been enough. I am very angry and and somewhat disgusted by the way that our own Mosque and our community works and runs I guess because me myself as a individual has no care or concern or interest in any form of politics I never did and I never will. I was only concerned about The humanitarian effort. I understand on the basis of what I was told by the people from the mosque in the community center as to why they don't want to participate I understand what you're saying but and I understand your fears but their fears that I don't have because this was only 100% a humanitarian effort. What I don't understand however is the treatment that I received from the committee of some members of the mosque and I understand that there are issues within your own the mosque and your own committee however the mosque is for the Muslims it is for us as a community and irregardless of my humanitarian events that I wanted to hold there there is a lot of other issues at the mosque that I pray get resolved and sorted out because the saddest thing about the mosque is all of the converts or people who are interested in Islam who turned away from Islam because of the treatment they received not necessarily by the members on the committee or the members of the Mosque staff but by the people within the Mosque so that means are Muslims in our own community it is really sickening and really sad the stories that I've heard. And I completely understand them because I too experienced it. I hope that this explains the situation completely and if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to message me however we are in the process of finding out what we can do with the donations that you did you collect your items that you did collect and InshaAllah we find a way or something to do with them maybe we are able to take a truck from here to Chicago to just give the items directly to another organization. Please brothers and sisters please give us some time and again I apologize I just never thought it would turn out like this this was a humanitarian effort this was just to help people nothing more I nothing less. And the outcome was from Allah! Alhamdulillah! JazakAllah Khair
