KSA and WSA Soaring

We did a little flying this morning before the wind picked up. After the storm, I discovered whats at the end of the rainbow. The tower on one side and soaring center on the other!

A great day at Sunflower! Patrick flew the first tows with Tony to regain proficiency, then took over the rest of the day. Brandon ran wings.

Kirk and Doug made Hays and back for Gold Distance/Diamond Goal. Kirk also managed Gold Altitude, reaching 13000 feet just after turning Hays.

Rob made his first outlanding in a nice corn stubble field. The retrieve required two trailers but all fun with friends to help.

Tony took Ayden up for an intro flight and they flew the Plevna Kingman triangle then Sterling Plevna and home. Over Sterling they managed 12,100 ft which should just bump up the State record for multiplace Altitude.

Bob had a good flight in his DG300 and then retrieved Rob.

Bob and Mike in the self launchers also had a good time. Bob flew roughly Hays Salina and back for a nice score on WeGlide.

Great spring post frontal day! Can't beat it.

We had a good soaring day Sunday!

Our friend Mike Davis passed away. He put a lot of work in at Sunflower and won the club maintenance trophy a couple times and the KSA Governors trophy in 2019. He was our "foreman" overseeing surface maintenance as well as the construction of the Soaring Center, Garage, and Hangar 3. We will miss him!

Celebration of life is April 4 at 11 AM at Dyck Arboretum

28 flights today (we think) celebrating 2/22 by flying 2-22's! It was cold but many toughed it out and were rewarded with fun flights. Tony and Brian instructed. Kirk, Maddux, and Johnny completed their ground launch endorsements. Chuck, Steve S, and Ruth also flew.

A few thermals were encountered. Most launches were around 1200 agl with 1600 being the highest. Several times during the afternoon both gliders were airborne.

There was plenty of activity on the ground too with Bob, David, and Steve L doing some landscaping and cleanup.

All in all it was a great first flying day for 2026!

We had a great turnout at the KSA Banquet last night celebrating the 2025 season. Congratulations to the winners! Thanks to Kirk Bittner for hosting and to Steven Leonard for teaching us about the history of the KSA traveling trophies!
