At 12:47 yesterday, WVFD and mutual aid partners were alerted to a reported barn fire on Bustard Road. Engine 83 and Skippack Chief 86 arrived on scene at 12:53 to find a detached garage with fire already through the roof, with extension to nearby landscaping up against the home, and threatening multiple vehicles and equipment. Crews deployed 6 hose lines off Engine 83 to contain the fire and protect the many exposure issues present in order to save as much property as possible. Fire Police completely shut down the road for the duration of the incident.

This call highlighted the importance of why the community sees us training in and outside of the township with our mutual aid partners on water supply. Due to the hydrant location, the first three arriving engines from Worcester, Skippack, and Towamencin laid a combined 2500’ of 5” supply line to establish a hydrant connection. While this was happening, Towamencin and Worcester tankers immediately positioned to supply water via the “clapper valve” tied into the supply line, allowing crews to deploy and flow multiple hose lines quickly while the hydrant connection was still being established, enabling a continuous water supply.

Thank you to our mutual aid partners for their assistance.

🚒 Future Firefighters in Action! 🚒

On Thursday, WVFD and welcomed 66 students in grades 8–12 for our annual Methacton Recruitment Day. Students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a variety of firefighting and rescue skills, including:

🚗 Vehicle Rescue – Learned the basics of rescuing occupants from damaged vehicles.

💦 Hoseline Operations – Got hands-on experience handling and operating a fire hose.

🚪 Forcible Entry – Practiced techniques used to gain access through locked or blocked doors.

🎈 Airbag Lifting Operations – Saw how rescue airbags are used to safely lift heavy objects during technical rescues.

🫁 Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Training – Wore and experienced the equipment firefighters use in hazardous environments.

🚒 Tower 53 Bucket Ride – Took a ride in the bucket of Tower 53 for a unique aerial perspective of the fireground.

🏃‍♂️ Firefighter Agility Challenge – Tested speed, coordination, and endurance through firefighter-inspired tasks.

🐕 K9 Demonstration – Watched a live demonstration showcasing how K9s assist with arson investigations and missing person searches.

A huge thank you to:
✅ The members of WVFD and LPFD who dedicated their time to facilitate the event
✅ FF Dave Soulen and K9 Wagner from the Norristown Fire Department for the outstanding K9 demonstration
✅ Methacton School District for their continued partnership and support of this program
✅ Tosco’s Pizza for supplying lunch

Both departments welcome cadet members starting at age 14. These programs provide an incredible opportunity for students to serve their community, build leadership skills, earn service hours toward graduation, strengthen college applications, and gain valuable life experience. Many of the volunteers today are currently Methacton students, and got to show their fellow classmates firsthand the skills they have learned!

We look forward to seeing some of these students join the ranks of our departments in the coming weeks and begin their journey in the fire service!
