Genesis Club is work-focused community of hope and dignity where mental health recovery is possible.

Genesis Club opened its doors on September 15, 1988 with 25 members. Twelve months prior, a committed and passionate Board of Directors decided that the city of Worcester should have a free-standing Clubhouse community. This decision was made after a visit to Fountain House in New York City, the first clubhouse model in the country. From a modest beginning, Genesis Club has developed a highly reco

gnized Accredited Clubhouse with Clubhouse International that is an Evidenced Based Practice with the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Genesis Club offers vocational training, education, employment, housing, wellness and social supports to over 550 members each year. Most importantly, Genesis Club offers a community of hope and dignity where recovery is possible. Genesis Club is one of twelve training centers of Clubhouse International. Since that time, the Genesis International Training Center has trained over 300 Clubhouses, 2000 colleagues from 35 states and 16 countries. Genesis Club strives to be a leading community partner with Worcester employers, landlords, families, colleges/universities and health care providers.

After 27 years, Mary got her driver’s license, giving her a renewed sense of freedom, independence, and confidence. This milestone allows her to travel to Connecticut to help care for her aging mother. She says she is already enjoying some of the simple pleasures that come with being able to drive again, including taking her dog to the dog park and coming to the Clubhouse more often.

This milestone was made possible through the support she received from the Clubhouse. Folks in the Environmental and Facilities Unit assisted Mary with setting up her appointment to take the exam and prepare for her driving test. Whether its getting back to work, or getting your drivers license, a strong Clubhouse can help members make strides that once seemed miles away!

Nothing beats good food, great music, and even better company! On August 13th, our Genesis Club family, members, staff, colleagues, and friends gathered at Green Hill Park for our annual picnic. From a wildly spirited game of music bingo to endless laughs and delicious eats, the energy was unmatched from start to finish. This park tradition is easily one of the highlights of our summer, bringing our community closer together under the warm sun. We are already counting down the days until the next one!

Genesis Club is excited to welcome Brandon Smith as our new Operations Director! Brandon brings solid experience in managing programs for youth and families, developing training programs, and building and leading teams. When asked why he wanted to shift his career to mental health and the Clubhouse model, he shared, “I am excited for the opportunity to work with people who are so invested in creating a mutually respectful and supportive community, I see the incredible value that the Clubhouse offers especially for young people struggling with their mental health.” When he’s not at the Clubhouse, you might find Brandon in the boxing ring, practicing his sparring, or spending time with his two dogs, Allie and Daisey. Welcome, Brandon. We’re glad you’re here!

Last week, Andre took an exciting step forward, starting a new job in the Housekeeping Department at UMass Chan Medical School!

Pictured here with his placement manager, Ted, Andre won’t be taking this step alone. As Andre learns the job and settles into his new routine, Ted will be there to provide guidance, encouragement, and support whenever challenges arise.

That ongoing support is one of the things that makes Transitional Employment (TE) positions so valuable for people working to re-enter the workforce. It’s more than an opportunity to earn a paycheck. It’s a chance to rebuild confidence, develop a routine, strengthen skills, and create a pathway toward lasting employment.

Andre is already feeling the difference.
“I feel great getting back to work. If I’m not doing anything, I get down on myself. I can already feel the difference in my outlook as I’m getting back into a work routine again. My goal is for this to lead to a permanent job!”

Congratulations, Andre! Here’s to new routines, renewed confidence, and new possibilities ahead.

This week, Genesis Club welcomed Worcester City Councilors Gary Rosen and Tony Economou for an engaging discussion about issues that matter to our community and our city.

Together, we talked about affordable housing, neighborhood safety, local ballot questions, and how Worcester is responding to the mental health challenges facing the City. We also talked about ways Genesis Club can continue working alongside local leaders to promote mental health awareness and improve community wellness throughout Worcester.

A big thank you to Councilors Rosen and Economou for taking the time to listen, answer questions, share their perspectives, and connect with our community. We appreciate the opportunity to have thoughtful conversations like these and to work together toward a safer, healthier, and more supportive Worcester for everyone!

When Jim started working at Genesis Club, there was no iPhone. No Facebook. No YouTube. No Google Maps. No Spotify. No Uber. No Instagram. That means Jim has been here longer than many of the things we now can't imagine living without.

Technology has changed. The world has changed. But for 25 years, one thing has remained constant: Jim's dedication, experience, and commitment to our community.

“What keeps me coming back is the excitement of working at a Clubhouse training center and staying connected to what’s happening throughout the Clubhouse world. I love the variety of roles and experiences that come with being part of a larger Clubhouse like Genesis Club, but what I’m most proud of is being part of a community where I get to see members succeed.”

Congratulations, Jim, on an incredible 25 years — and thank you for all that you brought us along the way! Kind of like Google Maps, we’d be lost without you!

Meet Lisa! Lisa has worked as a nurse for the past 10 years in behavioral health and has seen firsthand how important support and community is for recovery. For Lisa, running is a great way to challenge herself. “Being able to combine my passion for running with a cause that aligns so closely with my profession and personal values makes this year's race especially important to me! I am honored to once again be running the ASICS Falmouth Road Race in support of Genesis Club.”

Meet Dom, a recent graduate from Clark University and second-time runner for Team Genesis. As a student athlete, Dom understood the strong connection between physical and mental health. When asked why he is running Falmouth again, Dom said, “I have known friends and family members who have struggled with their mental health. Knowing there are places like Genesis Club that help with recovery is a great resource, and I want to share that with others.”

Every runner digs deep to find their own personal motivation and encouragement - especially on the hills. Today, we celebrate Nick and Carolyn, veteran runners, who have both overcome their own uphill battles in the past, and who will be running Falmouth this weekend!

When asked why she is running and raising money for Genesis Club for the 9th time, Carolyn said, “Genesis Club has touched so many lives, including my own. Running Falmouth allows me to spread the word to others.”

We wish both Nick and Carolyn the best of luck this Sunday!

Dave, who works in the Kitchen Unit – the heart of the clubhouse – has been on a personal journey to improve his time, technique and personal health. “For health reasons, and to become a better advocate for the Clubhouse model, I decided to join Team Genesis this year and run the Falmouth Road Race.” Genesis Club has proudly been a charity team for the last 19 years.
