Happy Nollaig na mBan - Womens Little Christmas

11/01/2022

A Donegal girl had a lucky escape, from being stolen by the Fairies at Halloween in 1839.

Be careful out there folks.

The background to the pension element of this story revolves around The Old Age Pensions Act 1908, which introduced a non-contributory pension for eligible people aged 70 and over. Proof of age was an essential part of the process of application for a pension. Because civil registration of births did not begin in Ireland until 1864, applicants had no official documentation to prove their age.

Our Story - Ár scéal

The mission of the WCFFES is to celebrate the history and achievements of the Irish in the American Fire Services, while helping its members to become more connected with their roots through education, social events and genealogical research assistance. We welcome anyone with an interest in the history of the Fire Service or those who have an interest in strengthening the bonds between Ireland and Irish America. You don't have to be Irish or a Firefighter to join. We have members from all walks of life, with both uniformed and civilian divisions.

In 2014, the WCFFES formed a Ceremonial Unit to provide assistance and guidance with special Fire Service events such as funerals, memorials, dedications and graduations. Trained by the elite FDNY Ceremonial Unit at Ft. Totten, Queens, the Emerald Society Ceremonial Unit stands ready to assist any area fire, police or EMS department. Currently, our membership is comprised of active and retired firemen and women of all ranks as well as civilians, representing the Cities and Towns of:
