Be cautious of a phone scam in which the caller claims to be a Sheriffโs Office employee. They inform victims that there is an arrest warrant in their name, or in the name of a loved one, or that there are general pending legal issues. To avoid jail time, the caller instructs the individual that they must pay a fine. Other common phone scams involve claims of missed jury duty and related fines.
In some cases, the scammer poses as an officer from the Worcester County Sheriffโs Office and requests money to resolve the issue. In other instances, the caller asks for payments to be made in the form of gift certificates. The caller keeps the victim on the line until they purchase the gift certificates and provide specific financial information from the certificates to the caller.
Our office and many of our partners in law enforcement have received numerous reports of phone scams.
The Worcester County Sheriff's Office encourages people to be aware of calls like this and to never give personal or financial information over the phone to anyone whom you didnโt call yourself.
