All Club sites of the Boys & Girls Club are closed today in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a celebration honoring the end of the enslavement of African-American people in the United States. It denotes the day, June 19th, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued on January 1st, 1863, was finally communicated to enslaved African-Americans in Texas. The notification of freedom was delayed by over two years, and freedom continues to be a work in progress. Certain Juneteenth events are designed to mobilize action, and all foster community participation. There is a community Juneteenth event this Saturday!
