Renewable Energy Worcester - RENEW

Renewable Energy Worcester - RENEW RENEW is a grassroots organization working to increase access to clean energy for low income and non-English-speaking households and communities of color.

We include non-energy benefits (e.g., local jobs and job training) in our clean energy projects. RENEW is a new grassroots community voice for Central MA entering debates about where we get our energy and who benefits from energy policies. We are working to develop clean energy projects in partnership with constituencies that have not been well represented in policy discussions. We center language

justice and popular education strategies in many of our events. RENEW also operates as a Community Energy Co-operative of Co-op Power, a Regional Energy Co-operative that supports local clean energy businesses. In partnership with Co-op Power and Resonant Energy, Renew participates in the U.S. Department of Energy Sunshot Initiative. We are enabling houses of worship and other small nonprofits to reduce the significant cost of their electricity bill with solar power at no upfront cost to the nonprofit.

As we prep for the future of RENEW Worcester, we're looking forward to learning from, uplifting and collaborating with others who are already doing the work. Thanks to Rural Power Now for generously sharing their lived experience with organizing for energy coops.

If you're a rural resident and/or a member of a rural electric cooperative, you're not going to want to miss this free training series starting in January 2026.

As costs of living rise, this training will be focused on organizing effectively at the local scale, to address issues related to energy affordability.

Not all heroes wear capes! Not all pollinators are bees 🐝🐝🐝

Solitary bees🐝, bumblebees, hoverflies🪰, butterflies🦋, moths, wasps and even beetles🪲 are all pollinators 👏

Around 4 in 5 crops and wild flowering plants rely on pollinators to transfer pollen and help them reproduce.

But pollinators are in a crisis and you can help change that!

📆On 26 - 28 September 2025 - join the Young Citizens Pollinators Assembly and learn more about the protection of pollinators 👉 https://citizens.ec.europa.eu/young-citizens-assembly-pollinators_en

Are there ways to make this work with Worcester's stretch code ordinance, or through Community Benefit Agreements? It would be so (literally) cool for the city, which is an urban heat sink.

France has taken a major step toward greener cities by making it mandatory for all new roofs on commercial buildings to be partially covered with either plants or solar panels. This progressive policy aims to tackle multiple urban challenges at once, from reducing heat islands to generating clean, renewable energy.

Green roofs, covered with plants, act as natural insulators, keeping buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. They absorb rainwater, reduce runoff, and support biodiversity by providing habitat for insects and birds in dense urban environments. At the same time, they improve air quality and add aesthetic value to city skylines, creating greener, more pleasant urban landscapes.

On the other hand, solar panel-covered roofs contribute to France’s renewable energy goals by harnessing sunlight to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and helps commercial buildings lower their energy costs in the long run.

By mandating these eco-friendly roofing options, France sets a strong example of how smart urban planning and environmental policies can work together to create sustainable cities. This initiative not only promotes a healthier urban environment but also inspires other countries to rethink their building regulations for a greener future.

How very cool is this idea? Calling it "the future of farming" is a little overblown, but it's certainly one more tool in the shed. How would you scale it for grassroots solar?

What if your food and your electricity came from the same field? 🌾☀️
In Fronreute, Germany, solar panels are floating above cherry trees — shielding crops, generating energy, and boosting yields all at once.
It’s called Dual Harvest, and it may just be the future of farming.

Today's solar inspo - the school district in Arkansas that reaped the benefits of owning their power. In three years, the district turned a $250k deficit into a $1.8M surplus, which they invested in higher salaries for their teachers. Not only that, the superintendent reports that the solar arrays provide educational opportunities for students of all ages to learn about renewable energy.

How cool to be able to watch this playing out in a nearby town. One of the major barriers in the move to cleaner cars has been the lack of infrastructure to support electric cars.
