Dear SSNA Members and Friends,
The next meeting of the SSNA is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12th, 7PM at the Mt. Carmel Apartments. The agenda for the meeting is below as well as some updates from the meeting last month.
Please share this email to anyone who you think may have interest in the information discussed at our meetings, anyone interested in attending our next meeting, or who would like to join our association.
Best regards,
Vincent Pedone
Updates from the June 6, 2023 meeting:
1. Updated School Committee District Lines-- We received an overview of the new district lines for the Worcester School Committee. If you have any questions about the upcoming municipal election, if you'd like to register to vote, or if you would like to request an absentee ballot, please follow this link https://www.worcesterma.gov/elections to the city's Election Commission webpage.
2. The city's Independence Day celebration with a concert at East Park and fireworks will be held this Thursday, June 29th with a rain date of June 30th. The SSNA has been granted permission to have a table to promote our association. Unfortunately, I will be unable to be at the table for the event because I have a graduation party that day/evening. Will anyone be able/willing to volunteer to represent the SSNA at the table at East Park during the city's celebration? Please message me directly if anyone can do it.
3. Request from members to revisit the bus stop at the corner of Shrewsbury Street and Prentice Street: Through Councilor Carlson, we have information on this item and will add it to our upcoming meeting agenda for 7-12.
4. Updates on construction projects along the Shrewsbury Street corridor: As you know, there are a number of proposed projects that we have been discussing at our meetings. Three specific projects were discussed at our 6-6-23 meeting. (1) We will have an update on the housing development in the Treat-me Donuts area. (2) The 280 unit project at the In-House Coffee property is on hold. It is my understanding that the project scope is challenging for the developer. We will have more information to share at our next meeting. (3) As for the proposed project at the corner of Oleum Ct. and Shrewsbury Street, we spoke in depth about this project. A number of concerns were raised with two major sticking points coming to top of concerns raised during the meeting -- size/scope of the project and the number of parking spots proposed by the developer. The association was informed that the developer is seeking a variance for the height of the building and relief from the number of parking spots needed for the residents of the new housing unit. There is a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday, June 28th) at City Hall to consider the developer's request for relief on the size, scope and parking. I, as an abutter, intend to share in writing concerns with the proposal as it relates to Zoning Board relief. If anyone wants to attend the meeting and their own concerns (or support) for the developer's request for relief on the size, density and parking, please feel free to attend the meeting. You can also submit written comments to [email protected]. You can also find information on the meeting and the project at the city's Planning Board's webpage https://www.worcesterma.gov/planning-regulatory/boards/planning-board.
Again, the Zoning Board hearing is tomorrow at 5:30PM in the Levi Lincoln room at City Hall.
Draft agenda for 7-12-23 SSNA Meeting:
1. Recognition of Senator Herriette Chandler;
2. Updates on proposed construction projects, including the Oleum Ct. project;
3. Report from our legislative delegation (Rep. Keefe, Senators Moore and Kennedy) on the state budget and other legislative matters;
4. Update from Council Carlson on city issues, including the bus stop at Prentice Street, construction projects, CSX funds, East Park playgrounds repairs, and an update on the Joe DiMaggio Little League field construction at East Park, and the relocation of the DPW garage and the Albany Street advisory committee;
5. Report from Officer Sean Lovely;
6. Report from the Shrewsbury Street Merchants on the Taste of Shrewsbury Street and discussion about outdoor dining;
7. Last, as we come up on the anniversary of Gary Vecchio's passing, I wanted to put in front of the group a question about continuation of the neighborhood association and its leadership. After Gary's passing, I said that I would head the association in this time of transition. I am happy to continue in this role but feel it is important to leave that decision up to the association's membership. I will add this as the last item for discussion at our meeting on 7-12.
Please let me know if there are any items you'd like me to add to the agenda or if I can be of assistance to you.
