Just in time for the holidays! ❤️📰

BREAKING THE CHAINS — PART TWO IS OFFICIALLY PUBLISHED!

And this time, we're talking about something many of us were never really taught growing up: BOUNDARIES!

Did you know that simply saying NO is a healthy boundary?

With the holidays approaching, many of us will be spending more time with family, friends, and loved ones. And while the holidays can bring joy, they can also bring stress, expectations, uncomfortable conversations, and situations that test our boundaries.

In this second article, we explore what boundaries are, why they're important, the consequences of not having healthy and consistent boundaries, and how to establish them using practical tools. I've also included additional reading resources for anyone who wants to continue learning.

But here's something I really want you to remember:

Boundaries are not just there to protect YOU. They're also there to protect OTHERS.

They affect our time, physical health, mental well-being, emotions, spirituality, relationships, and so much more.

And the beautiful thing about boundaries? You have the power to change them!

You can strengthen them, loosen them, or adjust them based on the person, situation, or season of life you're in. What worked for you five years ago might not work for you today, and that's OK!

However, we must remember that we cannot control whether someone respects our boundaries. What we can control is how we communicate them, how consistently we follow through, and what we choose to do when they're crossed.

One of my favorite lessons in this article is the illustration of four different boundary styles: The Brick Wall, The Barbed Wire Fence, The Meadow, and The Wooden Gate.

Which one represents you? You might be surprised!

My goal with these articles has never been just to share my story or see my name in print.

It's about education, prevention, growth, and creating change.**

I hope the information you take from these articles doesn't stop with you. I hope you share it with your children, families, friends, coworkers, and communities. I hope you practice these tools, teach them to others, and recognize how even small changes can make a difference.

Because knowledge is powerful, but what we choose to do with that knowledge is where change begins.

To the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, THANK YOU! ❤️

Thank you for continuing to provide a platform where voices can be heard, stories can be shared, and communities can learn from one another. Thank you for allowing me to share not only my experiences but also educational resources that can help individuals, families, and future generations.

You are part of the change our communities need!

And to everyone reading, please don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder! Support Black-owned journalism, stay informed, and continue supporting the voices and stories that matter in our communities.

We have two more articles coming in my Breaking the Chains series, and I can't wait to share them with you!

📅 November 24, 2026 — The Power of Choice

📅 December 29, 2026 — Healing Together

Through Sexual Abuse Warriors (SAW), our mission remains the same: Equipping Survivors. Empowering Communities.

Together, we will continue to REACH — Resilience, Empowerment, Acceptance, Community, and Hope.

And as we head into the holiday season, I want to leave you with this:

Boundaries are not about building a life where nobody can reach you. They're about recognizing when to open the gate, when to close it, and understanding that protecting your peace is also part of protecting your future.

You can love people and still have limits. You can be kind and still say no. You can forgive someone and still choose not to give them the same access to your life.

Your boundaries don't make you selfish. They help you create space for healthier relationships, personal growth, and peace. ❤️

With Love,

Analissa ❤️

From a Little Girl Who Struggled to Read to a Published Writer. ❤️📰

When I was a little girl, I used to watch my grandpa read the newspaper every single day.

It wasn't until later in life that I discovered my grandpa couldn't read very well himself. But that never stopped him. He read what he could, absorbed the information he understood, laughed at the funny comments, and checked the obituaries to see if anyone he knew or loved had passed away.

What he didn't know was that his little granddaughter was watching him, learning from him, and being inspired by him.

This photograph was taken by my wonderful Aunt Ginger Sanders. I remember this day and our little photo shoot so clearly. I also remember sitting there trying to read the words on those newspaper pages, struggling to pronounce them or comprehend what I was looking at.

I wasn't really reading. I was just following along, pretending I understood.

Little did I know that one day, I would be writing the very articles I once struggled to read.🥹❤️

Growing up with dyslexia and a speech impediment wasn't easy, especially when I didn't even know I had dyslexia. I struggled for years with reading, pronunciation, and expressing myself. I didn't really learn to read until around sixth grade. I was placed in specialized classes, and there were times when I felt so far behind.

I learned to hide my struggles behind humor. If I mispronounced a word, stumbled over my speech, or made a mistake, I would laugh and turn it into a joke before anyone else could. Making people laugh was easier than letting them see how much I was struggling.

Looking back, I realize I wasn't just covering up my mistakes. I was hiding a part of myself because I was afraid of how others might see me.

I probably could've been the poster child for “No Child Left Behind Law” because somebody definitely needed to come back and get me! 😂

But something happened that helped change my perspective.

One day, I was talking to my friend Meagan, complaining about being dyslexic and the challenges that came with it. She said something so simple, yet so powerful:

“But you love challenges."

I had never looked at it that way before.

And you know what? She was right. I DO love challenges!

I've always been someone who enjoys figuring things out, pushing myself, learning something new, and overcoming obstacles. Yet somehow, I had spent so much time looking at dyslexia as something that held me back instead of recognizing the strength I had developed while navigating it.

So, Meagan, thank you! ❤️ You probably didn't realize how much that conversation meant to me, but your words helped me see myself from a different perspective.

Sometimes, all it takes is someone reminding us of a strength we've had all along.

But look at me now!

That little girl who struggled to read is now reading more than 20 books a year, something I've been doing for the past three years.

And now? I'm officially a published writer for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, Minnesota's oldest Black-owned newspaper! 📰❤️

I can't even begin to explain how much this means to me.

This is bigger than an article. Bigger than seeing my name in print. This is about growth, perseverance, facing challenges, and realizing that the things we once believed would hold us back can become part of what makes our stories powerful.

To the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, THANK YOU for giving me the opportunity to share my stories, experiences, knowledge, and education with our communities. Thank you for continuing to provide a platform where voices can be heard, stories can be shared, and communities can learn from one another. To the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder,

You are part of the change our communities need.

And to anyone who has something important to say but worries about their spelling, grammar, reading ability, speech, or whether their words are good enough:

WRITE IT ANYWAY! SPEAK UP ANYWAY!

Get your thoughts out. Tell your story. Share your knowledge. Ask for help when you need it. Let the editors do their jobs, and don't allow the fear of imperfection to silence something that could change someone else's life.

You never know whose heart your words might touch or whose life your story might impact.

I can't help but think about my grandpa. I wish he were here to see this moment. I believe he would be so proud. ❤️

WIN — October 2026 Season Opening

Facebook

💜 WIN IS BACK—AND NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME! 💜

Tonight, October 8, we’re reconnecting for a new season of WIN—Warriors In Network, a support group for women ages 16 and up.

We take a summer break so everyone has time for family, summer plans, and the transition back to school and college. Our season runs from October through the first week of June.

📅 First Thursday of each month
✨ October exception: We begin tonight, the second Thursday!
🕗 8:15–9:15 p.m. Central
💻 On Zoom

I’ll do my best to give advance notice if a meeting changes or is canceled.

This season, we’re bringing more structure to our time together. We’ll begin with a brief introduction and check-in about how life has been and what we’re navigating, then move into education, a lesson, and practical tools. There will be opportunities to share throughout, with time boundaries that help everyone have a voice and allow us to finish our lessons.

WIN is a trauma-informed group where we discuss all forms of trauma and their effects. Our purpose is to learn how to move forward so trauma no longer controls our lives. Together, we share tools, tips, and resources that support healing, and provide education that helps strengthen prevention.

A few group guidelines:
💜 Share only what feels comfortable you can always pass.
💜 Respect one another’s privacy. Do not record, screenshot, or repeat someone else’s story.
💜 Take turns, keep check-ins brief, and make room for other voices.
💜 Listen without judgment. Ask before offering advice.
💜 Take a break whenever you need one.

Interested in joining? Send us your email address through a private message so we can send intake forms and learn a little about you before you join. Please keep personal details out of public comments.

I’m excited to welcome new members and reconnect with the women who have already been part of WIN. I’ve missed our time together, and I can’t wait to hear how you’ve been! 💜

Equipping Survivors. Empowering Communities.

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day.”

I used to hear that all the time.

And while technically it’s true, healing has taught me that time is not the only thing people need in order to grow.

Sometimes people don’t lack time.
Sometimes they lack:
• interest
• motivation
• emotional capacity
• direction
• peace
• healing

Not everyone spends their 24 hours the same because not everyone is mentally, emotionally, or spiritually in the same place.

The more I learn about trauma, emotional intelligence, habits, and healing, the more I realize that priorities and interests shape how we use our time.

The things we care about get our energy.
The things we prioritize get our consistency.

And once those two things align, time starts becoming more valuable.

That’s when growth becomes intentional.

Not accidental.

Healing really changes how you move through life.

What’s something you’ve started prioritizing differently as you’ve grown?
