Happy Why REquipment Wednesday!

How can someone remain independent when walking has become painful and unsafe?

A Massachusetts resident who had experienced five strokes was living with severe daily pain, instability, and repeated falls. His cane was no longer enough, and he needed a wheelchair to safely attend medical appointments and remain as independent as possible.

Without the statewide reuse program, he could not afford one.

After receiving a manual wheelchair from REquipment, he shared:
“Having the wheelchair has taken some physical stress off my body. It has made me more comfortable and able to go to my medical appointments with ease. Thank you.”

This is why REquipment and our entire reuse community matter. Access to the right equipment can mean greater safety, less pain, continued independence, and continued access to essential medical care.

Happy Why REquipment Wednesday! The day of the week we share a reason Massachusetts residents rely on the REquipment Durable Medical Equipment and Assistive Technology Reuse Program.

In July, REquipment heard from the granddaughter of a woman in New Bedford.

She wrote:

"I've been desperately trying to get my grandmother approved for a wheelchair. She fell at 1 a.m. and injured her face terribly while attempting to reach the kitchen using her walker. The walker isn't safe anymore.

"Unfortunately, I'm being ping-ponged back and forth between which provider should make the referral for her insurance."

While trying to navigate that process, her granddaughter found a Drive manual wheelchair available for free on the REquipment website.

Twelve days later, it was delivered to her grandmother in New Bedford.

The cost of delivery? Just $20.

This is why—and how—REquipment makes such a huge impact statewide. When someone needs essential equipment now, insurance delays and referral hurdles can have real consequences.

On REquipment's satisfaction survey, the granddaughter wrote:

"This is such an incredible program. It helped my grandmother during an incredibly painful & stressful time. I will forever be grateful this program exists and the process was absolutely seamless!"

That's Why REquipment Wednesday.

"In the summer of 2022, just a few weeks before starting Hampshire College, Rue began using a wheelchair. Rue had been working at Girl Scout camp, work that was incredibly rewarding but also physically taxing for a young person with an autoimmune syndrome.

“'It was a huge adjustment to start college while learning to use a wheelchair,'” Rue reflects. 'Also, my first wheelchair came from Amazon, and it was nearly impossible to use.'”

REquipment rarely learns the stories of the wheelchairs delivered to college campuses or what their users go on to accomplish. Read the rest of "Insurance Didn't Care if Rue Completed College. REquipment Did." https://f.mtr.cool/uknihjbrv6
