Ordinary things can bring dignity to a difficult situation.
Our Care Kits include:
Fresh meat and produce
Canned vegetables, pasta, sauces
Paper towels, toilet paper, food storage bags/wrap, paper plates
Multi surface cleaner, dish liquid, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent
Bath soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste and toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, combs and hair brushes
Specialty items (as needed): incontinence supplies, feminine hygiene items, diapers, and protein shakes

Sometimes a Care Kit meets a need no one knew was coming.

Meet Maddie Kay and her family.

Their home was already filled with the energy and laughter of four-year-old twins when they received the joyful news that another baby was on the way. That joy was soon accompanied by uncertainty when they learned their daughter would face significant developmental and physical challenges.

Doctors raised the possibility of ending the pregnancy, but for Maddie Kay’s parents, that was never a consideration. This was their daughter. They would welcome her, love her fiercely, protect her, and face every challenge together.

After hearing their story, The Essential Needs Project knew this family was exactly who our Care Kits were created to serve.

What we did not know was that Maddie Kay was back in the hospital on the day our team arrived with their delivery. Thankfully, one of her grandparents was at the home helping with chores and accepted the Care Kit for the family. The following day, Maddie Kay and her family were able to return home together.

Her mom later told us that the Care Kit spared them from making a much-needed grocery trip after their long hospital stay. But then she shared something that reminded us just how perfectly timed an ordinary act of kindness can be.

For the first time, we had included a case of bottled water in a Care Kit.

“We never buy bottled water for our home,” she told us. “But about 30 minutes after arriving home, our water went out, and we had to use every bottle of that water!”

What seemed like one small addition to us became exactly what this family needed—before any of us even knew the need existed.

Sweet Maddie Kay recently celebrated her first birthday. She is growing, reaching some milestones, and working toward others, surrounded by a family whose love and devotion have remained steadfast through every challenge.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve Maddie Kay’s family and honored that they allowed us to share their story. We thought we were delivering everyday essentials. In God’s perfect timing, we were delivering something they would need at exactly the right moment.

God knew the need long before we did. ❤️

From October 1–31, we need your help collecting 250 individual items. If we reach that goal, Thrivent will give The Essential Needs Project $250 to help us continue serving. Let’s earn that gift together.
