Gulf Coast Ticks...on summer vaca up north. It’s a thing!! When their wanderlust takes them outside of their more typical southern US distribution, summertime TickSpotters have reported adult GCTs in Rochester NY, Niagara Falls, Watersmeet MI, Raquette Lake NY, Chicago IL, Rumford RI, Jamestown RI, Henniker NH. Afraid...actually terrified!! It’s a pretty common response to a tick bite. But when you know the TYPE OF TICK biting, you can better assess the true risk for any disease. It’s a fact: different types of ticks transmit different germs, and because the infection rate also varies widely between types of ticks and types of germs, some BITES are much less risky than others. “Why do you often find these ticks on the top of your head?” Good question, and NO, they don’t jump or fall out of trees. In fact, we don’t know one tick biologist who thinks ticks fall out of trees onto heads. But they do crawl upwards after latching onto a host, and the head is where the skin is thinner and richer in blood capillaries on most hosts. Here are 2 true statements about ticks:
- The longer a tick is attached, the easier it is to find;
- The longer a tick is attached, the more likely it is to transmit an infectious dose of germs.
There’s a caveat about the second statement. Some germs, like the Powassan virus are transmitted quickly after tick attachment, while some take longer to cause an infection as they need the nutrients of the blood meal in the tick's gut to increase in number to an infectious level (Lyme bacteria), or to transform into an infectious form (babesia parasite). By 4 days of feeding, if the tick is infected, it most certainly has transmitted an infectious dose. Don’t delay—have the tick tested and contact your PHP!
But the TAKE-AWAY from this post really is: DO A TICK CHECK DAILY!!
