Many visitors that come to our River Center often ask who creates our beautiful puppets, the magical artist is Ed Rooney.

A Westport resident for over 35 years and former Conservation Commission member, Ed has spent the past two decades crafting and performing with handmade puppets. Drawing inspiration from his lifelong connection to waterways and his Azorean heritage rooted in generations of fishing.

Each puppet is handcrafted from recycled and discarded materials (foam, plastic signs, and other overlooked items) transformed into imaginative works of art that celebrate renewal, reuse, and the hidden life within our watershed. Ed’s puppets have become a beloved part of WRWA’s River Center and River Day, helping visitors connect with the creatures and stories of our local ecosystem. When he’s not building puppets, Ed shares his creativity through drumming and active community involvement.

Join us on River Day, June 20, 10am - 2pm, to see his incredible creations in action!

We are so grateful for Ed’s time, talent, and passion. To read more about his journey, go to our blog here: https://www.westportwatershed.org/post/wrwa-volunteer-spotlight-ed-rooney

From exploring the shores of Portsmouth, RI, as a child to inspiring generations of students through environmental education, Dan Harrington’s love of the water has made a lasting impact on our Westport community. πŸŒŠπŸ’™

While earning a Graduate Assistantship teaching aboard the Envirolab III through Harbor Explorations, Dan spent summers teaching coastal ecology with Thompson Island Outward Bound in partnership with the New England Aquarium . He brought that passion into the classroom at Watertown and Westport Community Schools , where he taught science and created an innovative Boatbuilding course with Dharma Voyage that connected students to hands-on learning and local maritime heritage.

Dan also shared his love of the water teaching sailing with New Bedford’s Sea Lab program. Now retired, he remains a valued member of the WRWA community, continuing to support field studies and watershed education programs through his volunteer work.

To quote Dan β€œI love bringing people onto the River and into the saltmarshes. Whether it’s aboard my little sailboat or with the Watershed and Captain Bill or Rick, it’s always a transcendent experience. Very few people get to see this wonderful river that we are asking people to care so much about. It only makes sense to get as many people as we can out there to experience it.”

We are so grateful for Dan’s dedication, kindness, and passion for protecting and stewarding our watershed. Thank you Dan, for all that you do for our community! πŸ’™
