Happenings in the field ๐Ÿ‘€

Recently two EMD Project Managers Chris Werre and Sarah Fortuna were accompanied by PSOs Laura Berard Leland Macey who attended the Fishing Partnership Safety and Survival Training at the USCG Station Portsmouth Harbor in New Castle, NH. ๐Ÿฆบ

This hands-on training covered all things safety from EPIRBs & MAYDAY calls to PFDs & Life Rafts. In addition to classroom learning sessions, trainees participated in hands-on activities including live firefighting exercises, flooding and damage control operations, and immersion suit drills.

At A.I.S., safety is at the forefront of everything we do. We are committed to keeping our teams up to date with the latest technology, skills, and operational advancements to ensure everyone gets home safe โš“

Fish ID Spotlight ๐Ÿ‘€
Yellowtail Flounder (Limanda ferruginea)

When our reviewers analyze footage from Northeast groundfish trawls, the Yellowtail Flounder is one of the most frequently encountered species on screen โ€” and one of the most important to identify accurately.

๐Ÿ“Œ Key ID Features:
๐ŸŸจ Right-eyed flatfish with a broad, oval body shape (body width approximately half of total length)
๐ŸŸจ Dorsal surface reddish-brown with diffuse rusty spotting, providing effective benthic camouflage
๐ŸŸจ Caudal fin distinctly yellow to orange โ€” primary diagnostic characteristic
๐ŸŸจ Lateral line strongly arched above the pectoral fin (distinguishes from Winter Flounder)
๐ŸŸจ Small, slightly upturned mouth with fleshy lips
๐ŸŸจ Both eyes located on the right side of the head

For our EM reviewers, distinguishing Yellowtail Flounder from similar flatfish species โ€” like Winter Flounder or Witch Flounder is a critical skill. Each species carries its own quota and reporting requirements under NOAA's Northeast Multispecies Groundfish Fishery Management Plan, meaning accurate ID directly supports sustainable fisheries management.

Yellowtail Flounder are found from Newfoundland to the Chesapeake Bay, with commercially significant concentrations on Georges Bank and in the Gulf of Maine, two of the primary fisheries our EM teams cover.

Stay tuned for more species from the field. ๐ŸŽฅ

Weโ€™re thrilled to spotlight Yana Mercado! ๐ŸŽŠ

Since joining us this year, Yana has become an invaluable part of our North Pacific Observer Program. Whether youโ€™re preparing for deployment, out in the field, or returning home, chances are youโ€™ve connected with Yana along the way.

Yana plays an important role in supporting our Alaska field staff, always bringing kindness, positivity, and a friendly presence to those around her. Outside of the office, she enjoys scuba diving, arts & crafts, archery, camping, and most recently, learning how to fish! Meet Yana ๐Ÿ‘‹

โœ… Give us a snapshot of what you do at AIS:

I provide logistical and administrative support for the observers in the North Pacific Observer Program before and after their deployments. This includes providing transportation, gear, supplies, and ensuring they have everything they need while they are in Seattle for their training, briefings, and debriefings.

โœ… Whatโ€™s the most unique part about working here?

One of the most unique parts is meeting field staff from all over the country as they deploy to Alaska and getting to hear about their diverse experiences.

โœ… What advice would you give someone who wants to get involved with fisheries?
That it is okay to take an unconventional path to get into fisheries and that there are many different pathways/avenues. You just have to keep looking for the opportunities that fit your skillset and not give up!

โœ… What inspires you about the work we do?

I have always been passionate about marine science and a career in fisheries has been a lifelong aspiration. I am really happy to be able to utilize my administrative skills to support our field staff and make an indirect contribution to the overarching goal of conservation and management of the fisheries in Alaska.

โœ… What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include scuba diving, arts & crafts, archery, camping, and most recently I have been learning how to fish! I have two adorable and energetic dogs, so I spend the majority of my free time being active and outdoors.

โœ… What is the next travel destination on your bucket list?
My next destination will hopefully be Spain & Portugal for a delayed honeymoon.

Fish ID Spotlight ๐Ÿ“ท

(Pseudopleuronectes americanus)

When reviewing footage from Northeast groundfish fisheries, is a key species that requires careful attention, especially given how easily it can be confused with other right-eyed flounders.

๐Ÿ“Œ Key ID Features
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Right-eyed flatfish with a more rounded, oval body shape
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Dorsal surface dark brown to black, often with small scattered spots
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Lateral line nearly straight (key distinction from Yellowtail Flounder)
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Caudal fin typically not brightly colored (lacks yellow/orange hue)
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Small mouth with thicker lips
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Often appears more โ€œstockyโ€ compared to similar species

For EM reviewers, distinguishing Winter Flounder from Yellowtail Flounder is critical. The straight lateral line and lack of a yellow tail are two of the most reliable visual cues during video review. are commonly found in nearshore and estuarine environments, ranging from Labrador to Georgia, and are frequently encountered in coastal fisheries.

Stay tuned for more species highlights from the field. ๐ŸŽฅ
